I just wanted to know if Catholic universities have financial aid for undocumented student … I am undocumented and wanted to go to a catholic school… so if u have any information please help…

Would it not be better to come into the US (or whatever country you’re in) in a legal manner, THEN ask for help?

After all, what do you think would happen to me were I to enter YOUR country illegally and ask for financial aid?

i can tell your not catholic or even christian for that matter…

I don’t know why you would suggest that–bpbasilphx gave you an honest answer.

But to answer your original question: I highly doubt that any schools have financial citizens for people in the US illegally. Most financial aid offices require that you apply for aid using a FAFSA form, which is overseen by the federal government.

By “undocumented” are you referring to your immigration status? If so, you won’t likely be able to get financial aid from any university- as far as I know, they all (even the private ones, as far as I know) require federal forms to be completed to see if you qualify, and those forms require proof of legal residency. It is not too difficult to immigrate to this country legally if you are going to college here.

Please ignore the hateful comments that some insensitive people have posted here. The Catholic Church does not foster such attitudes toward immigrants, even illegal ones. I know it’s very difficult to immigrate the “right way,” often all the paperwork and legal process takes more time and money than people can afford. I do not know your situation, but I have seen many people come here as refugees from war, poverty, illness, desperate situations. they put their lives at risk for the sake of their children to have a better life.

That being said, I would be extremely cautious about applying for financial aid or scholarships from a university while in an undocumented status. I would recommend trying to get your legal situation cleared up before doing anything along these lines. There are many counselors and agencies that can help you obtain legal status, and oftentimes true Catholics are the most compassionate and serious about being of aid to you. Don’t miss out on going to college because of this detail. You might have to hold off a year or a semester on college to get this sorted out, but the sooner you do it, the better. Then you won’t have problems finding a job or all the other things that come after college.

Best of luck!

Well depending on the state you live in, there might be financial assistance. I live in the state of Texas and work for a college and we offer whats called Texas Grant. This is financial assistance undocumented students can apply for to attend college, but they do have to meet certain guidelines. I am not sure as far as for a private school but I have been able to help out a lot of students continue on to the university after high school. Don’t be discouraged by what other people have said, ask around or contact the schools you want to attend and speak with a admissions rep. Where there’s a will there’s a way!! God bless! 👍

I was in the same situation when I was younger. There isn’t really much you can do except to do something about your legal status. Try to get a work authorization or a student visa.

Everyone’s situation is a little different so you might want to talk to a professional immigration lawyer. Just be careful not to take any advise to do something shady or pay high amounts of cash for advise. Some of those guys like to take advantage of immigrants.

And remember to have patience, life isn’t a race. I went to college 12 years ago and finally became a citizen this January. Now I’m back in school again…

So good luck!

I went to a university (non catholic) where a friend was undocumented and recurved financial aid, so it is possible. I suggest speaking anon with someone in the financial aid office and explaining the situation. I think private insts have more wiggle room with providing scholarships, though perhaps not with loans.

I agree with joanofarc. I have a friend who’s husband has lived here for the better part of eighteen years and only just now found out that whatever paperwork he’d come into the states on has expried thus rendering him an illegal. His mother recently went back to Mexico to try to get her visa again and now she can’t get back into the country so you can see why he’d be reluctant to try this himself, especially now that he and his wife had an 18 mo old and a new baby on the way!

Good luck trying to clear up your status and getting into College! I wish more US students had your dedication and drive to actually want to attend College instead of treating it like a constitutional right.
