Catholic Universities with Bands

My high school junior daughter is looking at Catholic colleges but wants to go to a college with a music program and a good band (particularly marching band). She is considering Notre Dame but it doesn’t have a good reputation for having a solid Catholic culture (it has Zen meditation on its calendar for crying out loud!) She is also looking at Steubenville, a solid choice, but it doesn’t seem to have the music program she is looking for.

Does anyone have any suggestions? She is interested in music ministry and absolutely loves her high school marching, concert and jazz bands and wants to continue these activities in college.
 
You are way underselling Notre Dame. Sorry, but I think they do just fine in teaching traditional Catholicism and exposing their students to different religions/beliefs as a way of making up more intelligent Catholics. Worked for me and my friends.

BTW, there are a lot of Asian grad students there. I don’t expect ND to totally force them out of their culture.
 
I don’t know about your financial situation or your daughter’s ability to procure scholarships, however, if she is going to be relying on student loans, I think it is a really, really, REALLY bad idea to sign onto a private university in order to get a degree for music ministry. I say this as a musician and the wife of a person who made this very egregious error, which I will work for the better part of a decade to help payoff. That isn’t a very good way for a young Catholic woman to start off life, especially if she wants to be a wife and mother early on. That being said, if money is no object, I know someone who attended Creighton University as a music major and she spoke very highly of the music program.
 
Go to a place with a good newman center.

Missouri state (NOT mizzou) is known for its marching program, and it has a great catholic student center.

Thanks for the reminder. I was listening to the local EWTN affiliate last week when a staff member of University of Louisiana Lafayette was on the program. The region is so steeped in Catholicism that he said it’s like going to a Catholic university while paying State tuition.

Another school with a great Catholic center is Texas A&M University – home of the Fightin’ Texas Aggies WHOOP:D I know that to be in the marching band you have to be a member of the Corps of Cadets, but they also have several other music groups (symphonic bands) and such. The St. Mary’s Catholic Center is one of the best in the country. I attend Mass their half the time, and they have amazing programs for the university students.

Boston College! Though I’m probably a bit jaded toward it, the school has a great band and they played in the inaugural parade this year. And the school is great academically.
 
There are a handful of colleges listed on the Newman Guide as faithfully Catholic but they are all fairly small schools and probably don’t have marching bands. I don’t know what keeps other colleges off the list. That has been a big mystery for me. I wish they would rate them all.

Anyway I would say your best bet would be to look for a larger college with a great Newman Center as one of the other posters suggested.

I certainly agree with the other Domer on here. Notre Dame is very passionate about its Catholicism. There are 140 Masses on campus each week, confessions three times daily, Eucharistic Adoration everyday, Rosary daily, 52 chapels with the Blessed Sacrament on campus including one in each dorm, NO CO-ED Dorms (very traditional way of life), fantastic theo and philo depts, over 600 students attended the Life March this year and Notre Dame was selected to lead this year. Honestly, she has nothing to worry about. It’s a bastion of Chatholicism. The nay-sayers are quite uninformed. She will love it and she will grow spiritually. AND THE BAND OF THE FIGHTING IRISH IS PHENOMENAL!!! over 370 members strong…It’s huge, and loud, and ND football games are irreplaceable Saturdays. …and the academics…WOW…TOUGH! Send her to ND. GO IRISH 🙂 God Bless!
