Catholic University Prof Orders U.S. Bishops Not to “Harass” Catholic PoliticiansHas a long history of public dissent from Catholic teaching yet is still allowed to teach at Marquette University
By Elizabeth O’Brien
MILWAUKEE, June 29, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) – In a letter to the New York Times on Monday, Daniel C. Maguire, a professor of moral theology at Marquette University and prominent Catholic dissident, stated that bishops should stop “harassing” Catholic politicians who vote in favor of abortion.
Maguire drew on St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas who both thought that to allow certain moral evils would prevent “greater evils.” He further cited Aquinas, who said that the “wise legislator” imitates God, who “tolerates certain evils lest greater evils ensue.”
I think it is high time Maguire is fired or Marquette loses its Catholic Idenity

I’d love to see him thrown out on his ear, but there’d probably be a lawsuit over tenure. Meanwhile, he tends, according to sources at First things, to be kept away from students.

And really, he’s such a spent force (though not one to be approved of) that he is becoming a charicature figure. Laughing in his face is about the most fitting response to his nonsense that comes to mind.

Blessings,

Gerry

Pax vobiscum!
“Similarly, today legislators who truly think abortion immoral could vote to keep it legal since greater evils, multiple deaths of women (especially poor women) from botched abortions as seen before Roe v. Wade, would follow.”
Really? A woman dying in the process of murdering her own child is a greater evil than not allowing the child to be murdered in the first place??? St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas must be turning in their graves! Unbelievable!

Roe v Wade was a factious case based on non-facts. So all of these children being murdered is the result of an evil lie.

Sounds like a certain moral theology professor needs to take Math 101.

How can it possibly be argued that the death of a few hundred to a thousand women every year from botched abortions before Roe vs Wade is a greater evil than the death of a MILLION babies every year today?

Didn’t somebody once observe that sin ‘darkens the intellect?’

His is basing he argument on a myth-the myth that lagre number of women died as a result of illegal abortions before Roe V Wade. The truth is the number was less than 300 per year. The stat he should be interested in is that after Roe was imposed on the country abortion increased by 1 million a year,

It is the typical rationale of one who is more interested in voting for Democrats than he is saving the lives of children We see a lot of that in CAF

Pax tecum!

Yeah, I know. We recently did the Genocide Awareness Project at my school and the Women’s Resource Center had one of their NARAL posters out there saying that 5,000 women died per year before Roe. Here is the e-mail I sent them:
The coathanger abortion sign that you used to protest the Genocide Awareness Project that
is still in your office is totally inaccurate. It states that 5,000 women died per year
of illegal abortion. That is simply not true. The US Bureau for Vital Statistics (part of
the Federal Center for Disease Control) reports these numbers:
1940- 1,679
1950- 316
1960- 289
1966- 120 (California was the first state to legalize in 1967)
1970- 128
1972- 39 (Roe v. Wade in 1973)
As you can see, these numbers are nowhere near the 5,000 per year that your sign claims.
In fact, to get a number higher than 1,000 we have to go back to the pre-Penicillin era.
Aside from this, there is the fact that about 50,000 women of child-bearing age die per
year. So for this 5,000 number to be true, that would have meant that the cause of death
for one out of every ten women before 1973 was caused by illegal abortion. It would have
accounted for 10% of all deaths, making it one of, if not the, leading cause of death for
women before 1973. I hope you see how ridiculous the 5,000 deaths a year claim is. I
recommend you take the sign down and not use it again, so that no one gets the idea that
you are trying to deceive women.
They have since taken the sign down from in their lobby.

Can we please have Catholic University profs. stop harrassing US Bishops. 😛

Sounds like the latter is already there or well on its way.
But an official proclamation like the one in NY is needed. Also any religious associated with the University should then lose their faculties in the diocese.

They listed the # of the theology department so one could call and complain, but they didn’t put a link to his actual letter so one could read it in its entirety. That sounds like a bad mix to me.

I do wish they’d get rid of this clown.

How about how many souls are damaged or even lost because of botched moral theology ? What is the point of teaching “moral theology” if you don’t want the bishops upholding it? Or perhaps you find the Catholic Faith embarrassing, since it is now so far out of alignment with current American Culture? The bishops are doing their job as shepherd of souls, professor, now why don’t you do yours?
