I love the Catholic Update! I have picked up a few from my parish from time to time…

Im just curious if anyone else orders these online? They are .55 cents a piece & are so packed with great advice & information about faith formation and spiritual nurturing.

Do you have a favorite one?

they are a mixed bag, you have to look at the index and check out the authors, it just depends on the topic. some are by reliable authors like Fr. Groeschell, others by problematic authors like Bp. Uentner or Richard Rohr. If you are using them for parish work you must be prepared to read each one and evaluate it. Too much work for me, I would rather work with reliable orthodox publishers like OSV so I don’t have to examine everything they put out.

bear in mind publishers and editors can also change. i have no idea what is going on over at Catholic Digest, for a while they were way out in la la land, now seem to be swinging back toward the center, but it is scary how a publication that can be a byword for reliability can turn shakey overnight. I have kept up my subscription because it benefits grandkids Catholic school, and relieved to see recent issues much better than in the last few years.

In general, I would nowadays sincerely advise AVOIDING ANYTHING published by the Saint Anthony Messenger Press, and unfortunately, that includes Catholic Updates. I have a few that are so off that I’m being charitable in not calling their content outright heretical. CU and St. Anthony Messenger Press are simply not reliable anymore.

I have to agree. It seems that most Franciscans these days are too contaminated by the heretical Liberation Theology. What comes out of St. Anthony Press is a mixed bag which when put on a scale tilts to cafeteria catholicism… 😛

I used to contribute to any solicitation I got by mail, then I started checking them out on the web. I stopped contributing to them when I found out that they support groups which actively, through propaganda and money, support abortion.

:blessyou:

(wishes people would not tar all, nor even “most”, Franciscans with such a brush and without other evidence)

I had to put up w/ CU’s in RCIA as a convert. For the most part, they are worthless tripe.

Just received in our bulletin a Catholic Update from Richard Rohr. Feb. 2011 edition, called “Wonderous Encounters” - day by day through Lent. If you read them, they sound like it comes from a left wing liberal protestant church…
St. Anthony Messenger Press and www.americancatholic.org have gone off the deep end.
I will send out an email to my Bible students to not get anything from them.
