Hello,

I wanted to ask what the official Catholic view is on funeral services. As a Catholic should it be a Mass or is a humanist funeral acceptable under Catholic doctrine? In other words can a Catholic be buried at a Humanist ceremony?

Thank You

Keith

In all honesty, I have never heard of a “humanist funeral”.

There are Funeral Masses, Memorial Services, insert X religious funerals, Celebrations of Life, Military Funerals, Graveside, etc.

I think it is very sad when the loved ones do not allow their deceased Catholic loved one to have a funeral Mass, however, it happens every day.

I went to one Humanist funeral. I did not know that is what it would be until I was there. It most certainly would not be what the Catholic Church considers to be a funeral liturgy.

Many thanks for all the kind answers and it has given me exactly what I was looking for.
Best Wishes
Keith

As a Catholic I would go with a Catholic priest as a mark of communion with what I see as the church of God.

Whatever the type of funeral, I wish for God to comfort everyone who is grieving. It is an extremely spiritual time that causes many of us to reflect on the universe, life and everything.

My question would be why would one want such? The funeral mass involves an intention for the soul of the departed.

A liturgy of the Word is also appropriate for Catholics. It is popular in families with mixed religions or none at all; it avoids all the issues around reception of the Eucharist; it is a licit option.

These are also common in locations where there are more deacons than priests.
