I have found Modestly Yours to be a good reminder that there are actually modest young women like myself (because I don’t come across many).
It is important even for those who are striving to lead chaste lives to remember, that modesty and purity do come hand in hand as section 2521 in the Catechism states. It is still a shock to my brain to see how teenage girls, famous (Miley Cyrus) and not, have had such poor parenting that they are allowed to leave the house dressed as street walkers.Prayers are in order for these girls.
I believe that not only does purity go hand in hand with modesty, but also high self-esteem.
Dear Musicadmirer,
Cordial greetings and thanks for your excellent comments above.
It is a sad reflection of the times in which we are now living that it is necessary to try to convince Catholics, who ought to know better, that immodest attire is unacceptable. This would not have been a hotly debated issue among the faithful prior to the 1960’s.
Since the moral revolution of sixties, our Western culture has become increasingly decadent and brash. The things which would once have made tender Catholic consciences recoil in disgust sadly no longer do so. We are now in awful danger of becoming deadened to the prevailing decadence, so that we are no longer offended by that which is unseemly or improper.
If I have understood are Catechism correctly, then our Church has spoken quite unambiguously on this whole matter of modesty in our clothing (CCC, paras. 2521-2523). Moreover, St. Paul in one of his Pastoral letters says to young Timothy, “women should adorn themselves
modestly and sensibly in
seemly aparrel” (I Tim. 2: 9). Now if the Church and Sacred Scripture have spoken as plainly as that, then Catholics should submit themselves to this teaching without demur. BTW, the word translated “modesty” in the Timothy text denotes a sense of shame and a shrinking back from trespassing the boundaries of propriety. Thus any attire that is decidedly indecent, for example mini-skirts, bikin’s and low-cut garmments revealing cleavage, does not fit the bill and should be avoided by all Catholic woman. They should rather seek to wear clothing that is expressive of an inner modesty and of a sober outlook on life, that is to say a Christian outlook.
Finally, it is one thing for a woman to make herself attractive, but quite another thing to make herself seductive, or to look like, to use your term, a street walker; woman do know the difference and so do men.
It is uncommon but, nevertheless, encouraging to hear from a young woman like yourself who is seeking to be modest and pure; you are an inspiration to all of us in these decadent times.
God bless you Musicadmirer.
Warmest good wishes,
