Good Morning Everyone,

I was wondering what are some good old black & White or vintage Catholic Movies?
Ive already watched the Reluctant Saint last weekend.

Thanks
Rose

Not sure if 1968 is considered “vintage,” but would suggest “The Cardinal.”

I liked the ROBE
THE CHALICE
BEN HUR
THE SONG OF BURNEDET
SHOES OF THE FISHERMAN
and a few others.
Peace.

Best old Catholic movie: my vote goes to The Keys of the Kingdom, starring Gregory Peck as a priest who goes to China (IIRC, from Scotland) and spends most of his life there as a missionary priest.
Its really, really good. The novel it is based on, by the same name, by AJ Cronin is also excellent.

The Scarlet and the Black starring Gregory Peck and Christopher Plummer. Based on a true story. Plummer was excellent in this - much better than his The Sound of Music performance!

Going My Way
The Bells of St. Mary’s

Bonus: pretty sure Bing Crosby sings in both. 🙂

1928 - silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc
1938 - Angels With Dirty Faces
1944 - The Fighting Sullivans
1951 - Angels In The Outfield
1952 - When In Rome
1966 - The Trouble With Angels

I love The Trouble With Angels! Rosalind Russell was wonderful!

“The Passion of Joan of Arc” is a 1928 French avant-garde film that is emotionally intense for a silent film. “The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima” is a 1952 Warner Bros. Film (surprisingly). Although it is not talked about that much, it is a very beautiful film that I highly recommend.

The movie is fun - I don’t know how many times I’ve watched it - but the book is even better. Life with Mother Superior by Jane Trahey.

The Detective. It is a Father Brown movie starring Alec Guinness. Guinness converted to Catholicism in part due to an experience while filming the movie.

I just looked at the Wikipedia page for that and it sounds like a film I would greatly enjoy. Thank you for the recommendation, exnihilo 👍, because I had never heard of that one! I’m going to seek it out, even though I have a brand new Catholic DVD sitting right here next to me, and which for some reason I’ve been unable to bring myself around to watch for months now.

YES-! One of Otto Preminger’s best movies - very comparable to “Shoes of The Fisherman” (and not just because they’re both 3 hours long).
