Catholic, what do you call yourself?

A list of possible suggestions (which I had to shorten down to 10 for the poll):
  • an affirming Catholic
  • a cafeteria Catholic
  • a conservative Catholic
  • a lapsed Catholic
  • a liberal Catholic
  • a moderate Catholic
  • a nominal Catholic
  • a progressive Catholic
  • a practicing Catholic
  • a serious Catholic
  • a thinking Catholic
  • a TLM Catholic
  • a traditional Catholic
  • a traditionalist Catholic
  • a tridentine Catholic
  • a Vatican II Catholic
  • other (please tell us in a post)
I apologize in advance if there are any adjectives that should have made the list that I didn’t think of.

Two caveats:
  1. The primary question here is how you see yourself. You may also answer variants of that question (which is where “non-Catholics” can get into the discussion) e.g. what you’ve heard others call themselves.
  2. I realize that for some the first self-description that comes to mind might be “Republican Catholic”, “Irish Catholic”, “big and tall Catholic” and so on. With that in mind, let me specify: no descriptions about age, sex, location, nationality, ethnicity, politics, social concerns, social status, marital status, career, education, health, well-being, physical characteristics, mood (I’ll just assume that anyone who has read to this point is bored and impatient), or forum participation.
 
I went with “moderate Catholic.”

I’m a practicing Catholic to the best of my knowledge and ability. I go to Mass; I obey the Lenten dietary restrictions; I try to follow the rules.

But I’m a little more towards the center on anti-gay discrimination and bullying, possibly because I was discriminated against and bullied. I don’t take the really strong anti-gay positions some Catholics do.
 
I’m the first other. I call myself a hard-identity Malankara Syriac. I might come off as harsh not to me mean, but to be clear. Sometimes, fellow Catholics dislike the directness in which I have been willing to call out latinisms or nontraditionalism. Others perceive it as a dislike of them, but its really the system or the philosophy I oppose not any individuals
 
What would TLM stand for? Just out of curiosity. I’ve heard most on the list, mainly Practicing or Non-Practicing, and Cafeteria. I’ve been told by people “I’m a Recovering Catholic” which doesn’t really tell me much despite the joke. Oh, I’ve heard Cultural Catholic, or said differently, “My family is Catholic.”
 
An adopted son of God, brother of Christ, and one unworthy of the grace of God…what do you call yourself?
 
I just call myself a Catholic Christian. It seems like labeling beyond that would encourage divisiveness, sort of like we’re all Americans but people insist on labeling themselves or others black/white, republican/democrat, etc.
 
I am a Latin Rite Catholic. Period. No further description necessary. :tiphat:
 
Just out of curiosity, is this really a “non-Catholic Religion” thread?
 
When people ask me, I say I am a Maronite. When they say ‘what’ is that, I explain, in much the same way as SyroMalankara.

Well … less so now than in the early stages of planning, because of my decision to include a Poll. However, non-Catholics are still invited to post, vis-a-vis what types of Catholics you know.
 
Catholic. Just Catholic. Maybe an Honored (to be) Catholic, Blessed (to be) Catholic, or some variation thereof.
 
Catholic. That’s it. I think I’ve used practicing. I would never use devout but I might use serious. I’m not sure most people would interpret some of those the same way I would mean them.

Fair enough.

Most of the familial Catholics I know would simply call themselves “Catholic” or if pushed to categorize given the choices above would select “cafeteria Catholic” if they were being honest seeing as they don’t follow Catholic teaching in many cases.

Have a pair of friends who would definitely categorize themselves as “Millennial Catholics” if asked.

When I read this, I thought you were saying that if someone says “What is Maronite?” you respond “It’s much the same as Syro-Malankaran.” :D, just for a second.
