I consider myself a traditional Catholic, or a traditional Latin Rite Catholic.
Possibly I could make it one.Just out of curiosity, is this really a “non-Catholic Religion” thread?
I too find conversations like this to be divisive and harmful to the cohesiveness of the brotherhood of Christ.I just call myself a Catholic Christian. It seems like labeling beyond that would encourage divisiveness, sort of like we’re all Americans but people insist on labeling themselves or others black/white, republican/democrat, etc.
I say you are doing really well at this pointI don’t know how to label myself- I’d say I’m an evolving catholic- maybe someone can put a name to it for me.
I started as a cradle catholic. Left the faith for many years and morphed info a “catholic” (my definition then was I am catholic- I don’t judge, my relationship with God is my own- none of your business, I don’t need to go to church to be catholic, i’ll go to heaven cause God knows I believe in him, people have a right to do whatever they want- God will be the judge & I truly believed people won’t go to Hell if they are good people)
NOW- I believe in the sacraments, I am getting into the habit of going to church and confession, I pray the rosary usually daily as well as am studying the bible and the scriptures online. I believe a lot of people go to hell (and I don’t want to be one of those). I believe in purgatory. I believe the Holy Eucharist should NOT be touched by any laymen- except in extreme cases. I would go to Latin mass if I could for that reason alone. I don’t look down on those who receive in the hand however- because it takes courage and understanding to reach that point I believe most catholics have become luke warm- and have created their own versions of catholicism- based on what “fits” with their views… which is terrifying.
I’m trying to become a good Catholic- yet still have oh so much to learn about what that truly means.
What am I?
Because the Sadducean Catholics, Essene Catholics, Samaritan Catholics, and Lost Tribes Catholics would be left out.Why isn’t Pharisaical Catholic an option? Hmpf! :dts:
Had to look that one upWhy isn’t Pharisaical Catholic an option? Hmpf! :dts:
You’re very kind, thank youI say you are doing really well at this point![]()
Here ya’ll go:Because the Sadducean Catholics, Essene Catholics, Samaritan Catholics, and Lost Tribes Catholics would be left out.
Semitic Catholics: West Syriacs because our high priests carry the staff and seat of MosesHere ya’ll go:
Pharasaic Catholics = Latins, because they like laws and rationalism a lot
Hellenistic Catholics = Byzantines, because they like saying funny Greek things
Lost Tribes Catholics = Protestants, because they’ve been separated from the fold
Essene Catholics = Alexandrians, because they are masters of asceticism
Samaritan Catholics = East Syrians, because they like to keep it simple
Sadduccean Catholics = Old Catholics/Anglicans, because they have priests, but not all the traditions of doctrine
TBD: Armenians and West Syrians (Maybe you can help place these this one, SyroMalankara).
I am a Catholic and I love being a Catholic.Catholic, what do you call yourself?
A list of possible suggestions (which I had to shorten down to 10 for the poll):
I apologize in advance if there are any adjectives that should have made the list that I didn’t think of.
- an affirming Catholic
- a cafeteria Catholic
- a conservative Catholic
- a lapsed Catholic
- a liberal Catholic
- a moderate Catholic
- a nominal Catholic
- a progressive Catholic
- a practicing Catholic
- a serious Catholic
- a thinking Catholic
- a TLM Catholic
- a traditional Catholic
- a traditionalist Catholic
- a tridentine Catholic
- a Vatican II Catholic
- other (please tell us in a post)
Two caveats:
- The primary question here is how you see yourself. You may also answer variants of that question (which is where “non-Catholics” can get into the discussion) e.g. what you’ve heard others call themselves.
- I realize that for some the first self-description that comes to mind might be “Republican Catholic”, “Irish Catholic”, “big and tall Catholic” and so on. With that in mind, let me specify: no descriptions about age, sex, location, nationality, ethnicity, politics, social concerns, social status, marital status, career, education, health, well-being, physical characteristics, mood (I’ll just assume that anyone who has read to this point is bored and impatient), or forum participation.
A practicing Catholic, I chose other. I also despise labels, they divide us.
Hey Kendra - Good to see a post from you. How are you feeling? Are you doing better?I’m just Catholic. A stinky ol’ papist.![]()
I would have no preference,Catholic, what do you call yourself?
