Why do so many people assume that a woman trying to live by Catholic moral standards of sexuality is a nun? This is not just a Catholic standard; it is also a Christian standard. Not only that, it is a standard that applies to men, as well–both Christian and Catholic.

Here is a clarification. There is the general category, Women. Inside that category are subsets, one of which is Catholic (that is my set). Inside the Catholic Women subset is a smaller subset, Nun. In other words, every Catholic nun is a Catholic woman but not all Catholic women are nuns. Does everyone understand now?

When I was younger, people often assumed I was a nun! We had an order of “plain-clothes” Dominican sisters in town, and because I dressed modestly, had shorter hair, and wore little makeup, people would think I was one of the sisters. I knew it had gone too far one day when I was walking up to the choir loft and someone wanting my attention said, “Sister?” and I answered, “Yes?” 😃

Now I’m old enough that no one even considers that I might be interested in dating or anything sexual, so it’s no longer a problem.

With being married - I don’t really get teased as my sexual morality is really not a topic for discussion. It only becomes a topic when I am trying to help someone out with a problem and using life experience which was a mixture of Catholic morality and secular immorality. It just depends on what part of my life I was in. I find that when I don’t come off judgemental I don’t get teased - if I make the mistake of judging then I get judged right back.

I always have the same problem as CarrieH. Everybody calls me a Nun, because I dress modestly and not that much make up at all. I dress a lot like the sisters in my town. haha. I always say Thank you for calling my a Catholic Sister. They are beautiful women and feel blessed I can look like them… I always get called the nickname Bible Hugger!! I say " I love hugging my bible" LOL God Bless![SIGN][/SIGN]Jesus Is my lover and my soul!

You are right; they are beautiful and accomplished women! I never thought that I should take the comments as compliments! I have always felt that they were critical jibes. Yours is a much wiser perspective.
