Catholic women's study ideas

Hi there-

I am trying to lead a Catholic women’s study. I say try because I don’t really want to lead one but there’s a need, I want to study the Bible, and no one else will do it, so…😃

I know there are plenty of good Catholic studies. We’ve already done two books of the “Courageous Women” series.

I’m wondering if there are any good videos/DVDs for women that I can show to my group to kick off the studies? I have to admit I went to the Focus on the Family Focus on Marriage seminar, and being strong in my faith I knew I could attend and not have it shake my Catholic faith, but I really enjoyed Beth Moore. I know that there are significant problems with her studies from a Catholic perspective, but how I wish we had resources like that - her energy, humor, and enthusiasm.

I was wondering also if any of you ladies have any other ideas for a good Catholic bible study experience? 🙂

I have done Beth Moores studies and ended up really having to defend my faith.
I was only drawn to Bible Study + Child Care… Since then my Cathollc Church has hosted BS with that needed CC. We have done several of Jeff Cavin’s studies and loved them. More bible, and more aplication than Moore. Start with the time line. His energy and passion wsa wonderful. He brings alot of knowledge from the jewish culture that helps it all come together.

The apologetics series was also good, Bible reasons for why we believe what we do.

A Scriptural Journey With Mary by Jenne Kun was also good during Advent…That was how I named my youngest!
There are some great resources out there! Keep looking!
 
We ended up choosing Woman of Grace:

Thanks all for your suggestions though - they will be handy for future studies. Oh how I wish we could do our study during the day but I just can’t get enough resources together, mainly willing help, for childcare. How do those Protestants do it?? LOL 😉 Oh well, we have been doing okay meeting 2 nights a month. I’m hoping that having a potluck dinner, games and fellowship, to kick off this next study will being some more ladies around…
 
I looked at the website for Women of Grace but could not find anything concrete about this program – it is all prattle about “authentic femininity” without any definitions.

Could somebody please give me a precis of what exactly is meant by “authentic femininity”? Thank you.

Basically the idea of “authentic femininity” is the opposite of radical feminism which IMHO forms secular society’s basis for feminism in general. An authentic femininity is one that models God’s plan for womanhood and doesn’t reject what makes it unique.

While trying to look for resources that could maybe give you a better definition than the one rattling around in this overworked brain :D, I found this book which actually would make a great women’s study:

Confirmatioin Students who need service hours and your Youth Group are great sources for childcare!

If some of the kids are older, you can assign them to be the “baby sitters” - make sure they’re near by so that you can check on them from time to time. Or, in the worst case, just let the babies and toddlers come to the Bible study. It won’t harm them. 🙂

When I was a little Protestant baby, I’m pretty sure they just stuck us all in a play pen or a room with a gated door, and let us play on our own. Unless someone was shrieking, or unless we all went suddenly quiet, they mostly just left us alone. I’m pretty sure they could see us, since someone would come running if any of us started crying, but we were far enough away that our noises were not disturbing to them.

I read the reviews of the book and have concluded that in order to be an “authentic” woman, you must be married with children. That’s the main reason I left the Mormon church (well, they go even farther and say that single women cannot make it to the top level of Heaven and must spend eternity serving the married) and as a lifelong spinster I think it’s sad. It reminds me of the adult social group in one church I attended (briefly) that was called “Pairs and Spares.” We spinsters and bachelors, of course, were the “spares”.

Oh, I don’t think that to be true at all! Not to say that you are necessarily wrong, but it is true that most women are called to the vocation of marriage, just as most men. So these studies are geared toward that market.

But I don’t believe that is what authentic femininity is about or that is what the Church believes. I mean, look at some of our greatest saints, they were consecrated religious women and two are included as Doctors of the Church.

The feminine nature is probably most recognizeable in the vocation of marriage because it encompasses almost everything that it is about - nurturing, mothering, teaching, healing, and these are qualities that radical feminism wants to diminish or outright ignore in order to believe that gender is irrelevant.
