Catholicism and Authoritarian governments?

It seems to me by the historical record that the Catholic Church has often been a keen supporter of authoritarian governments and dictatorships, which tend to torture, murder, rape, and oppress their peoples, so long as the Church gets some sort of benefit or isn’t touched. At least pre-Vatican II that is. And even after, sometimes. No?

I’m not so sure about the dictator part, but yes the Catholic Church has favored monarchies in the past. As Christians, we live in a monarchy. God was not elected.
