I just wanted to bump this up. I think that it is useful reading for people on this board. True, there are differences but nothing that could not be handled with respect and dignity for the other faith.

Interesting. I have no desire in discussing what it says about Catholicism or Orthodoxy. I would like to ask some questions about the Mormon info, if i may. I would also like to ask them one at a time.

First, it says that the CoJCoLDS is tritheistic. Does that mean that it is not Monotheistic like Catholicism? In other words, does Mormonism proper fall under a polytheistic definition?

We believe there is one God, as Paul said:

1 Timothy 2:

5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

I thought that. Why does this site claim you guys to be tritheists? Is this a Mormon site?

I don’t know about that site. That is not an official LDS site. Whatever is said there is the opinion of those write it. That is not how I understand LDS doctrine.

There are a lot of things that you don’t understand about LDS doctrine zerinus.

It is a page out of “The Mormon Encyclopedia”. A publication that your church endorses and references quite often in its own magazines (Ensign and New Era). lds.org used to have a direct link to it. For whatever reason, they have removed the link. But you can still find the online encyclopedia at BYU.

Hey RebeccaJ my college has the Encyclopida of Mormonism in the reference section. I’m sure they were dontated years ago and they teach a lot on classes on other faiths.

Anyway it is a 4 volume set. I could look it up if you wish tomorrow when I’m in town:thumbsup:

That would be interesting.

That is one of the things the mormon church reported, in their official church news…that this encyclopedia was in many libraries throughout the world, providing a concise and accurate description of mormon doctrine.

The copyright at the bottom the the OP’s link indicates it came from vol 1, an entry titled “Catholicism and Mormonism”.

This came from the same site:

The Godhead
“Latter-day Saints believe in God the Father; his Son, Jesus Christ; and the Holy Ghost (A of F 1). These three Gods form the Godhead, which holds the keys of power over the universe. Each member of the Godhead is an independent personage, separate and distinct from the other two, the three being in perfect unity and harmony with each other (AF, chap. 2).” Encyclopedia of Mormonism

Now I don’ t know if this is correct but that would answer your question.

There is one God whom we all worship, even though there be “gods many and Lords many” (1 Cor. 8:5–6). Jesus prayed to the Father (and commanded others to pray to Him); the Father never prayed to the Son. Jesus worshipped the Father (and commanded others to worship Him); the Father never worshipped the Son. Jesus calls the Father His God (and our God); the Father never called the Son His God. Conclusion: there is only one God whom we all worship, including Jesus and the Holy Ghost, and that is the Father. There is no other God beside Him, in the strictest sense of the term:

Moses 1:

6 And I have a work for thee, Moses, my son; and thou art in the similitude of mine Only Begotten; and mine Only Begotten is and shall be the Savior, for he is full of grace and truth; but there is no God beside me, and all things are present with me, for I know them all.

I don’t care what the Encyclopaedia says. The true LDS doctrine is that stated above.

perhaps you could explain the BoA cross reference to your moses quote since it keeps talking about Gods plural. (Ab 4 and 5) or D&C 132, 76 or especially 121. you will have a difficult time claiming monotheism is LDs doctrine even with your sola scriptura approach. Your prophets and apostles have taught from JS on down a plurality of Gods. only in the BoM do we see mormon monotheism and that book doesn’t seem to be the source of LDS doctrine since JS started writing the D&C (with sidney rigdon’s help)

why me says that the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are three separate gods. zerinus says that there’s only the Father, and that the Son and the Holy Spirit are not divine at all. Then there’s the question of whether or not there are other gods of other planets, and whether or not regular men can become gods themelves.

Will the real LDS doctrines make themselves known, please?

zerinus,
Not to go off on a tangent, but how and why would the encyclopedia of Mormonism, which seems to be assembled BY the CoJCoLDS have information in it that is not Mormon teaching?

It may be Mormon teaching; but it teaches it in a language that makes it amenable to distortion by anti-Mormonism. Those who wrote them were not thinking in terms of anti-Mormon responses; or did not have the experience of debating with or reading anti-Mormon literature; which if they had they might have couched their doctrinal expressions in a language that guards against distortion by anti-Mormonism. Ultimately, the doctrines of the Church are that which is contained in the standard works of the Church, not in any other source, including the “Encyclopaedia”. I derive my doctrines directly from that source. That is what our Church leaders have always advised us to do.

zerinus

of course I listed those LDS scriptures that refer to multiple Gods and strangely enough Z chose to ignore them.

I find it interesting that these same church leaders keep churning out lesson manuals that refer to multiple Gods, God once being a man on another planet and man becoming God.

It is a very defining and core belief of mormonism. For any mormon to claim otherwise shows either ignorance of their own faith, or an intent to deceive.
