come on you gotta admit … finding a unified theory of physics would be pretty impressive? Almost as impressive will be when they get that super-collider in Switzerland going (and if they can capture some dark matter).

Do you guys know that scientists have actually found a way to teleport quantum particles. Imagine if one day we can do this with large objects, or even humans? Imagine if a wormhole can move us back in time. Physicists are working on building a wormhole now (a small one incapable of transporting humans, not that our mass could hold up in a wormhole anyway). These things do impress me … I concede.
Yes I do enjoy Isaac Asimov novels. 😉
Do you guys think it’s OK for science to do these things? What if one day within a few decades science finds a way to make humans immortal (scientists have already discovered how to make a single cell immortal). Would this be playing god? Curious as to what your views are …
Interesting questions. You should start a thread about it.

God bless

OK perhaps I was a bit over zealous in my reply post (can an atheist be over zealous?? Hmmm, interesting thought). I guess I wasn’t displaying sufficient candor or proper demeanor when I berated your faith system, so I plead guilty to the charge.

Frankly though, I’m not trying to “convince” you of anything (I’m not foolish enough to think I can dissuade Christians away from their faith). I’m just on a long business trip & I’m kind of bored (now if I was a drunkard and adulterer I’m sure I could find much more interesting things to keep me busy, but I’m not … and such is the irony of life:)).
Well, even if you’re not trying to convince us of anything, it is still important to treat others with respect. Productive, intelligent conversation is possible even if no one experiences a major conversion. At the very least, the two sides gain a deeper understanding of the other group’s beliefs. It’s not like we’re different species 😛
However, I don’t believe most Christians are inherently “hate filled” but rather the natural discourse between those of different denominations and different religions all together inevitably becomes “hateful” (and no matter how you slice it this is a fact). Moreover, I can’t help but to find religion equivalent to any other sort of ancient mythology. You always have this god or gods who conveniently never reveal themselves. They always have only revealed themselves to ancient men, and there’s always some profound reason why they don’t reveal themselves now … to you and me. Well, I think that’s obvious nonsense.
There are miracles in modern times. You may not have witnessed any, but that doesn’t mean they never happen. God reveals Himself continuously- sometimes it’s just not that easy to notice- or so it seems to me.
Ahhh … I vented 🙂
Oh, you were only venting? Well, that makes everything better 😉 But I’d appreciate it if you vented to people who know that you’re only venting, and not just acting like an intolerant jerk (Like I often do :o)

As for time travel, if it ever became possible, we would know about it already 😛 Because, inevitably, some idiot would get his hands on a time machine, go back in time, and do something stupid, altering the course of history and probably leaving some sort of record of having traveled through time. Because that’s the way comic books, video games, and bad sci-fi movies work  😃

I would dispute your statement here (empirical evidence please?). Martin Luther once said that reason is a whore (and an enemy to faith … maybe I’m paraphrasing, I can’t remember). Of course he was right, reason is an enemy to faith. Conveniently empirical evidence never exists revealing this god of yours or his appearances on earth. There’s alleged sightings (or apparitions); and even mass delusion (confusing what is really atmospheric phenomena with some sort of supernatural divine message to us).

hmmm … no (I was referring to my dislike of Bill Maher & my lack of appreciation for his work). I don’t think I’ve been intolerant, merely critical (of course you may view anyone who is critical of your faith as intolerant … but objectively speaking I have not been intolerant).

actually that’s not true (the butterfly effect, according to modern physics, would actually NOT occur). What would happen is another time dimension would be created (i.e. a parallel universe). Many physicists today believe there may be numerous dimensions already (even an infinite number). There are several competing theories … but suffice it to say your claim is not a necessary consequence of time travel (or even a likely one).

Several competing theories, each one faith based.

Modern cosmology has more in common with astrology than science.

But it’s a whole lot more fun than your idea. Evidently we destroy ourselves by war or some other means before we leran how to travel through time. That’s why no one has come back in time to give us the technology necessary for time travel 😛

What would you accept as empirical evidence of God’s existence?

BTW (to the poster above who made a comment referring to religolous) I don’t even like Bill Maher & moreover I found his movie to be a simplistic smear of religion, which in many cases had its facts all wrong (particularly when Maher was drawing parallels to Christianity & ancient pagan deities). One thing I can’t stand is bad information or someone who puts themselves out there as an expert on something (much less makes a movie about a topic) & doesn’t even take the time to properly research the facts.
I saw Bill Maher say something about a “talking snake” in the *Religulous *trailer, so I thought maybe you got it from that. I must admit I’ve never actually seen the movie… 🙂

=humble_in_doubt;5039905]I’m right about all of it … it’s you guys who live in a fantasy world; but hey as long as you guys restrict your hatred of other religions (or hatred masked as love … or whatever you want to call it) and other people to hoopla on the internet, I suppose it’s harmless enough.
I’m just glad our new administration isn’t going to allow ancient mythology to guide their policy (which is quite scary for those of us who have common sense).
A few questions for the enlightend one of this post.

What is the orginal source of everything in the Universe?

If not of “clay” of what sunstance?

And if “common sense” allows, promotes and compels the killing of innocent babies and old people, it seems apparant that in no way is “common-sense” connected to logic, to intellect or to even the crudest sense of morality.

THANK YOU CREATOR for making me stupid!

There is an old expression: “open foot…” (can’t remember the rest, too stupid I guess.)

Love and prayers friend, how do you sleep at night. Very well is my guess?

I saw and interesting billboard recently. It said, “folks who do not believe in miracles are simply denying reality”.

Let’s look at one miracle in particular. In Mexico, over 400 years ago. Mary appeared to St. Juan Diego. As this so called myth goes, a miraculous image of Our Lady was formed on his cloak (tilma) that was made of cactus fiber.

The cloak is over 400 years old, but any cloak made of such a material ony lasts for about 25 years, then it rots away, The image itself is made of pigments not available 400 years ago.

At high magnification, a reflection in Our Lady’s eye shows a micro image of St. Juan Diego, yet it was only discovered in the 1800’s that the eye does actually reflect the image of what it sees.

So this image was impossible to make 400 years ago, could not have survived over 25 years, BUT there it is intact after all this time, and no one to this day can duplicate it on the similar material and make it last more than 25 years without it rotting and falling apart. How is that possible ??? Could it be that GOD only knows !
