I am reading Catholicism for dummies to get me started on the basics. On one page it states that “Luke recieved much of his data from Jesus’s mother, the Virgin Mary, and Mark received plenty of info from Peter, the apostle Jesus left in charge”. I was aware of the connection with Mark and Peter but, how do we know Luke obtained the majority of his data from Mary?

Who else would have known the happenings in the Infancy Narrative other than the mother of Jesus?

That’s a good point. But, it could have just been oral tradition also. And Luke goes into much more than just Christ infancy. He is more detailed I think than Matthew or Mark…so…it would have had to been someone who was close to Jesus through out His life, ministry, death, and resurrection. But, there is nothing that points directly to Mary in Luke’s gospel is what I mean. It could have been a cousin or a brother. From what I understand the Catholic faith doesnt dismiss the idea of Jesus having had step brothers. Is it a teaching of an early Church father perhaps that Mary was the source of information? Just interested to know.

1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things which have been accomplished among us, 2 just as they were delivered to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word, 3 it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 that you may know the truth concerning the things of which you have been informed. (Luke 1:1-4)
Mary was probably the eyewitness source of Luke’s info about the conception, birth and early life of Jesus in Luke, chapters 1 and 2.

The Catholic Encyclopedia article, “Virgin Birth of Christ,” in the section, “Sources of this doctrine,” discusses Luke’s possible source(s) for Luke, chapters 1 and 2. If there was something in the early Church Fathers about Luke getting his information directly from Mary, I’m sure the article would have mentioned it.

Edit: added link to article.

That’s a good point. But, it could have just been oral tradition also.
The entire bible is oral Tradition in written form. It was not written as it happened. God directly wrote the Decalogue onto stone tablets “in real time”, but everything else was written down afterwards - sometimes decades or even hundreds of years later. God the Father wrote only those ten commandments for us, and they were lost - but preserved in the oral tradition of the Jews. Jesus wrote only in the sand (John 8) and it was also lost - but likewise preserved in the manner of the Jewish oral tradition - written down decades later by the Apostle John.

Mary pondered everything in her heart. Being sinless, she did not blab it all over town - even though as a Jewish mother, she could easily have told every woman and mother “Have I got the Son for you!”

She pondered rather than spoke - the essence of avoiding sin. When she spoke it is of great importance to us. Let’s move to the Gospel of John for a moment. At the wedding feast at Cana, (John 2) the wine ran out.

Mary and Jesus were invited guests and bore no direct responsibility for the event - that was upon the families of the two who had been married. So, why was she so concerned about the lack of wine? And, even more mysteriously, why did she tell Jesus about it and then command the servants “Do whatever He tells you”?

Jesus was not a wine merchant, did not run out in search of wine. Wine required a vineyard, workers, the growing season, a wine press, wine skins and…time. They had no time, as the shortage was right then.

Therefore, we are left to wonder: What did Mary know; how on earth did she know it? And there’s the rub. Better to ask “How in heaven did she know it” as that was the origin of her knowledge.

God is beautiful, life-giving and mysterious. Mary, being created by her own Son (think of that!) to bear the God-Man, displayed those same traits - lacking only the divinity.
