We are talking about the idea of ‘extending Catholic morality’. I know that Catholics think that it is a ‘fact’ that the unborn have the same rights as others, and the right to occupy the body of their mother until birth. But this is not a ‘fact’. It cannot be scientifically demonstrated. It can only be deduced as a matter of philosophy. That is not to say it is wrong, but there is a problem when Catholics cannot convince others of their opinion (which they regard as ‘fact’. What I am suggesting is a focus on actually reducing the number of abortions, rather than on criminalizing them. A democratic consensus is possible on that issue. but not on the Catholic position on abortion, which is rejected in its extremes by almost everyone, including, I suspect, most Catholics (I mean rape, incest, high probability of maternal death etc). I think almost everyone can agree that no democratic society will again legislate for the Catholic position (see what is happening in Ireland now), so the rational thing is to give up on legislation, and concentrate on support for mothers.
