I thought the side by side comparisons were interesting on this website, and then I put in “Roman Catholicism vs. Christianity” and was surprised to find a “formed” date of Roman Catholicism of 3rd-5th centuries C.E. and a “formed” date of Christianity of 33 C.E.

Is there a church doctrine we could share with this site to show that the formation of Roman Catholicism goes back to Christ & Peter?

Correct me if I’m wrong but are you posting as to suggest that the protestant/non denominational churches go back further than the Catholic Church? Was that what you were trying to figure out? I mean obviously protestants don’t since they didn’t exist until the schism. And as for the non denominationals, younger still. My great grandma, God Bless her (104 years old and still kickin) is older than my ex girlfriends “church” lololol

The word “Catholic” was used as early as 107 AD by Ignatius of Antioch to distinguish it from others who claimed to be Christian and called their meeting places “churches”. It was not until 313 AD that the Catholic Church was recognized by the state but it was always the form of Christianity started by the Apostles.

This chart is simply in error and should be corrected.

Personally, I also find it offensive that they list dates as “C.E.”

Is it any surprise that Protestants would want to date the origins of the Catholic Church to some time (any time) after the first century? They can never settle on an actual date though, since unlike any other Christian church there was no person or event to mark the beginning of the Catholic Church after Pentecost at the latest.

It started out as basic “Christianity” did it not?
And various forms of Christianity sprouted and developed in those first few centuries, using different books and interpretations.
I did a quick search in the encyclopedias…it looks as though the word “Catholic” and it’s specific direction/group began to be in use several centuries later, as the site says, around the 3rd century.
I’m gonna check some more, tho…
Christianity is universal and universal is Catholic.
If it’s Christian, it’s also Catholic.

This claim is just that, a claim. Do such claimants have anything other than their own self serving interpretation of Scripture to back it up? No. Were are the documents from that era that clearly teach current Protestant doctrines? Until such documents are brought forth these claims should be dismissed by any Christian or other person with intellectual integrity. But to the contrary there are documents from the earliest eras that show Catholic teaching from the start.

Not so much offensive as indicative of a mindset. The fact that Hindus, Jews, Muslims atheists etc have no reason to suppose a “common era” begain in 1A.D. is neither here nor there as far as the “common Era” Christophobes are concerned…what is important to them and all that is important is that they do not have to utter or write the dread words “Domini” or worse still “Christ”.

I think they’re just using “Christianity” to as a generic reference to all Christians. You can also compare the Protestant denominations and the Eastern orthodox to Christianity. Though it doesn’t really make sense to include Christianity on the list as well as all of the different groups of Christians.

As to early evidence of The Catholic Church, Ignatius of Antioch, born in A.D. 50, the second Bishop after St. Peter in Antioch and the first Martyr in the Coliseum, said “Wherever Jesus Christ is, there is The Catholic Church.” There are also mountains of evidence fo Catholics writings, documents and Churches down from the very beginning down to our very own time.
That website is bunk.
The Catholic Church is the original Church founded by Jesus Christ. There were no other Christian Churches in Western Europe until 16 Centuries after Christ.

You might ask them when their churches started:

Do you have any idea when your church was founded and by whom? You may find this enlightening:

If you are of the Catholic faith, Jesus Christ founded your Church in the year A.D. 30.
If you are Lutheran, your religion was founded by Martin Luther, an ex-monk in the Catholic Church, in 1517.
If you are Anabaptist, your religion was founded by Nicholas Storch and Thomas Munzer in Germany in 1521.
If you belong to the Church of England (Anglican), your religion was founded by King Henry VIII in the year 1534 because the pope would not grant him a divorce with the right to remarry.
If you belong to the Mennonites, your church was started in 1536 by Menno Simons in Switzerland.
If you are a Calvinist, Jon Calvin started your belief system in 1555 in Switzerland.
If you are a Presbyterian, your religion was founded when John Knox brought the teachings of John Calvin to Scotland in the Year 1560.
If you are Unitarian, your group developed in Europe in the 1500s.
If you are a Congregationalist, your religion branched off Puritanism in the early 1600s in England.
If you are a Baptist, you owe the tenets of your religion to John Smyth, who launched it in Amsterdam in 1607.
If you are Dutch Reformed, Michaelis Jones founded your church in New York in 1628.
If you are a Methodist, your religion was founded by John and Charles Wesley in England in 1744.
If you are an Episcopalian, your church came from England to the American colonies. It formed a separate religion founded by Samuel Seabury in 1789.
If you are a Campellite Christian Church, your religion was started by Thomas and Alexander Campbell and Barton Stone at a revival held at Bushy Creek around 1836.
If you are a Mormon (Latter-day Saints), Joseph Smith started your church in Palmyra, N.Y. in 1830.
If you are Seventh Day Adventist, your religion was founded by Ellen Whitein 1844 in Washington, New Hampshire.
If you worship with the Salvation Army, your sect began with William Booth in London in 1865.
If you are a Christian Scientist, you look to 1879 as the year your religion was founded by Mary Baker Eddy.
If you are a Jehovah’s Witness, your religion was founded by Charles Taze Russell in Pennsylvania in the 1870s.
If you’re Church of Christ, your church broke of from the Campellites in 1906.
If you are Pentecostal, your religion was started in the Topeka, Kansas in 1901 by Charles F. Parkham
If you are Assemblies of God your church grew out of Pentecostalism in 1914 in Hot Springs, Az.
If you are a member of Four-square Gospel, your church was started by Aimee Semple McPherson in L.A. in 1917.
If your Church of Christ, your church broke of from the Campellites in 1906.
If you are Calvary Chapel, Chuck Smith founded your church in Costa Mesa, Ca, 1965
If your organization is “evangelical nondenominational Christian” your group started in the 1970s by protestant evangelists.
If you are Messianic Christian, your religion was founded around 2000 by Evangelical Protestants and retains many of the doctrines of Protestantism devised in th 1600’s.

Re: that link, I didn’t find it the least bit interesting.

I didn’t see ANYWHERE the letter to the Romans mentioned. Probably because that would have completely screwed up their timeline. You DO realize Romans was written to the Church of Rome…right? Paul wrote the letter ~54 a.d. And in Rom 1, Paul says the Church of Rome was already there at the time of his writing, AND that there obedience to faith was being reported around the world. Therefore, how do these people think they can convince ANYBODY knowledgable, that the Catholic Church started in the 3rd century? sheesh!
  • Ignatius has already been mentioned by others, but Ignatius Bp of Antioch, was bishop from ~69 a.d. to ~107 a.d. Being a disciple of St John the apostle, he was the 1st of the ECF’s in writing, to call the Church the Catholic Church. No ECF, argued about the name, or were confused about the name. Which means the name Catholic Church was in use DURING apostolic times even before Ignatius put the name in writing…and the name Catholic Church continued in writing, by the ECF’s after Ignatius death, i.e. Justin Martyr, Polycarp, Irenaeus… By the beginning of the 4th century, the council of Nicea made the Catholic Church an article of faith in the Nicean creed, " we believe in One Holy Catholic Apostolic Church".
  • The distinction Catholicism v Christianity is a flawed distinction. Catholicism is the Christian Church. Jesus established 1 Church only, the Catholic Church. This is not a man made Church but a divinely established Church which not even the gates of hell will prevail against it. Jesus is NOT the author of all this division/confusion in Christianity. Jesus is NOT the one pulling anybody away from the Catholic Church or directing anyone away from joining the Catholic Church.
  • Here’s a passage from Romans that makes the point.
  • *Rom 16:17 I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. 18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people. 19 Everyone has heard about your obedience, so I rejoice because of you; but I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil. *20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. iow Satan is the author of division. And those who divide aren’t serving our Lord but Satan
  • 2 Tim 4:3 the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear
Look how many people desperately argue against the Catholic Church or try and distort history to try and convince others that the Catholic Church isn’t the true Church. If they only knew, In effect, “Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit.”.

Make your life easier and demand that the burden of proof rest on the positive claims made by the website.
The easy temptation is to educate them on the matter.
This is very well intentioned I am sure. However, what you may not realize is that simply engaging with one with this way will not be the end of it. If their history denial is this deep, you need to try to dig into the ignorance and the basis for it before going any further.

I have not read the website because, frankly the stupid burns the brain there. If my saying that is a bannable offense, so be it.
