I have a question, what exactly is the point of the incense and candles? What does it do? I was just asked about this today. Thanks!

Pax,
Zach
If I’m not mistaken, the smoke of the incense goes back even to the Old Testament type as a sign of our prayers ascending to heaven.

Rev 8:4 and the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God from the hand of the angel.

… and if I’m not mistaken, its also for purification going back to OT times.

This isn’t surprising. Certain fundamentalists have been spreading lies about the Church ever since the Protestant reformation.

Just wondering, but how many people really think that? I’m assuming evangelicals,or at least the snake handlers. I have heard whisperings of some mainline churches making similar statements.
I’ve never met anyone taking the extreme position that the CC is antichrist. But where I live, with Baptists outnumbering Catholics 40 to 1, theres a very low opinion of the Church, many thinking that it is not even Christian, nor will you ever find salvation by being Catholic. Several Baptist friends who are willing to listen to actual facts about Catholicism (compared to many who just accuse with nonsense but do not want to learn) have unfortunately told me they got their misinformation from their Sunday schools and their pulpits. 😦

One of my bestest buds is Baptist. I invited her to Ash Wednesday Mass with me a couple of years back, she accepted. She had to excuse herself part of the way through to use the powder room. I felt like making a joke about her missing the sacrificing of the goat or something to see her reaction. It was bad enough when a Hail Mary was said - you’d almost think we’d invoked the Prince of Darkness rather than the Blessed Virgin. 🤷

Just curious, did she ever go back to Mass with you? I know sometimes the Ash Wed stuff is hard for non Catholics to understand. I remember a funny bit on SNL where Tina Fey on the weekend update segment said, “last Wed, Catholics celebrated Ash Wed where they get ashes placed on their foreheads in the form of a cross and come back to work to freak out their co-workers”…or something to that effect…Kind of funny, because that’s pretty much how it works every year where I work…

She wouldn’t be able to even if she wanted (suspect very muchly that she wouldn’t anyway) - we live too far apart. It was one of those times when all the stars aligned.
