Are Catholics forbidden to seek acupuncture as a medical treatment? I tried following the suggested links here but they do not work. Thank you in advance for your replies.

I’ve never heard of it either. That’s why I’m asking.

It is worth a try. Alternative medicine is preferable to opiates and the possibility of addiction. I suffer from chronic pain, and would try it if I could afford it.

Whilst we are on the subject of acupuncture, I’d really like to recommend cupping for back stiffness and pain. It has saved my life a few times. Leaves some nice bruises for a few days mind you.

I have used it many times for chronic arthritic pain. Each treatment worked for about three weeks for me. I discontinued because of the cost.

There’s nothing wrong with acupuncture from a perspective of Catholic faith and morals.

However, from a medical and scientific perspective, acupuncture and other “alternative medicines” are widely regarded as pseudoscience that rely on the placebo effect… That’s much more troubling, to me anyways.

People might associate acupuncture with eastern philosophy…kind of like yoga and hindu beliefs…

A priest I know took his relative to have this done because nothing else helped. The relative got better.

I have never undergone acupuncture myself, nor has anyone in my immediate family, but I have known a sufficient number of people, over the years, who have been cured of chronic conditions that never responded to conventional medical treatments, to dispel my earlier suspicions. Even a friend’s dog was cured by acupunture. It was many years ago and I don’t remember the details, but I think that was the moment when I began to suspend my disbelief.
