Today (9/18/20) is Rosh Hashanah. Is it appropriate for a Catholic to celebrate this holiday?

If you are Catholic it doesn’t mean much. If you have Jewish friends and family you will probably be invited to celebrate with them and I think it is perfectly fine to attend the seder. This year in many places there is still Coronavirus so probably for many it will be just a Zoom meeting anyway (and it is ok for me, I enjoy the family reunion but I am not a big fan of the sheep head… 🤢)

The questions that immediately come to mind are: does Rosh Hashanah have anything to do with indicating a future messiah? And - why would you want to celebrate this Jewish holiday…? The questions are connected. We don’t do things that contradict the reality of the Christ Who has already come…

I don’t see why a catholic would celebrate it in the religious sense. Of course, if you have Jewish friends or family, nothing wrong with wishing them a happy holiday.

I looked into the holiday and it does not seem like it is talking about the “future messiah” it looks like it is a celebration of creation. The main reason I want to go is that one of my friends I don’t get to see often will be there.

I believe Jews eat apples with honey for this feast, which sounds very good to me as apples in autumn are wonderful and I love honey. So I’ll do that. Also, if I had a shofar I would blow it. That would be fun, but my my neighbors might not like it.

Last I knew, Catholics were allowed to celebrate the beauty of God’s Creation.

Go and enjoy the company of your friend.
