This sounds like another one of your fancy ways to detract from the subject at hand, and to avoid the already plainly stated facts here in this topic, and in many other topics which you post in. Your statement about Adventists here doesn’t even come close to Catholic teachings, let alone Adventist teachings.

**Sure! <WINK!>
Remember that the SDAs, 200 years ago changed the Worship day of the Christian Church, just like it was prophetizied would happen by Daniel. He erred when he said “He” when it should have been “She”. We all believe the prophet, Ms White was a woman! “He will speak out against the Most High and wear down the saints of the Highest One, and he will intend to make alterations in times and in law; and they will be given into his hand for a time, times, and half a time.” Daniel 7:25 **

There has also, always been more than one “Church” in existence. While the Bible doesn’t specifically name any one denomination, it clearly reflects more than one organization as being a “Church.”

**There were acually only two that worshipped the real God **“Jewish” and later “Christian” Then in 1517 a cancer srtuck the catholic church now there are 33,000 denominations, with 28,000 sub denominations having 1,375 doctrines and dogmas. Thse 6,000 growths on the body of Christ has even grew other growths called cults! They follow some Christian things, some Jewish things, and IMO make some things up! 👍

In post #5 of this topic, the question was asked, “How could there be “evening and morning” on the first three days of creation?” A Bible answer was given. Do you have anything to add to that?

**Sure! That is an easy one! They are both fables! The two creations stories which don’t even agree with each other in any way shape or matter aren’t factualy.

Remember friend: “Only God was there!”

The truths that these cute stories contain are simply:
There is only One God!
He made everything from Nothing!
He loves us!
He wants us to be joined with Him for Eternity
We disobeyed Him due to our Free will!
We are above all things!

And that is the truth no matter how you attempt to twist it! **

There has only ever been One Church and that is The Body of Christ. Read the New Testament specifically Ephesians.

To say and believe that there are more than one “Church” is to say and believe that Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ is more than One Body.

The Bible teaches that The Body of Christ and His Church, His Bride, are ONE…not many. Pray about that.

God bless all!!!

Patrick, the originator of the 6 questions I stated in one of my first posts here appears quite unwilling to actually dig deeper into the nebulous topics suggested by his “questions,” but I feel that it is worth continuing here anyways.

Although he tries to deny it; Patrick is very busy quoting anti-Adventist sources as he asks these 6 questions, for eg, Canright, an ex-Adventist leader asks the same 6 questions, in very similar wording, in one of his books, and following that lead is every other individual who wants to object to the fourth commandment, using theories of evolution to destroy the Bible account of literal Creation.

A more modern day anti-Adventist cult leader, one Dale Ratzlaf, echoes these 6 questions on page 21-22 of one of his more “famous” books. Of course, it is easy to find web sites which also echo these anti-Adventist cults, and for Patrick to say he came up with these questions all on his own, makes his case appear quite weak on several fronts.

I find it amazing that Catholics here cannot even use their own official writings to oppose the Bible’s literal Creation story, of seven, literal 24 hour days.

When it comes to the source of Patrick’s “questions” it is worth noting as did Philip Melanchthon, in The Augsburg Confession:
“The truth cannot be gathered from common rumors or the revilings of enemies”
In summary, lets examine these 6 questions, one by one. As soon as the first one is discussed a bit, I will be happy to move onto the 2nd one.

Question: 1.
How is there light and darkness, evening and morning for 3 days before the sun and stars are created on the 4th day?
Answer: What the Bible says about Creation, on each of the seven days thereof, is sufficient. I have faith in the literal creation story, because of the written Word of God, and not just God’s Word in Genesis, but, rather, faith in God’s Word everywhere in the Bible which talks about or refers to the creation story, and the seventh-day Sabbath.

Patrick’s requested restriction of only using the text in Genesis 1 & 2 by itself to “answer” his venomous “questions” is not Biblically correct, for on any given subject, the entire Bible must be consulted in order for us to be able to say “the Bible says…"

Here is one of many questions about Patrick’s first "question:
" If all the other days clearly have “evening and mornings” why would the ones where it’s not as clearly or explicitly stated, (such as the seventh day) not also have the same 24 hours? What reason is there to say the number of hours in some of the creation days would be different? And what do you say it will “prove” if they were different, or if they were not literally 24 hours?
The real answer to your question #1 is because God says there was. God said there was “evening and morning” on those first three days, so there was:
Gen 1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
Gen 1:8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
Gen 1:13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.
We are told elsewhere in Scripture: “by faith we understand…” and this is certainly one of the deciding factors here for this question about how there could be “light and darkness” “evening and morning” for three days before God set the sun and stars in place on the fourth day. Gen.1:7 tells us that “God set them in the firmament of the heaven;” not precluding a source of light being possible on the first three days of creation.

In a similar way; we cannot prove the resurrection is going to happen; except by way of God’s written Word. But we know that it is so; for “by faith we understand…”

In facing this #1 question, it is the same: “…Through faith, we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.” (Heb.11:3). In other words, science, and evolution cannot fully explain the literal creation.

The days of creation, including the seventh day were literal, 24 hour days, because the Bible declares it. There was “morning and evening” on the first three days. We have to trust that it is so because God declares it in His holy Word.

Is God’s answer not good enough for you?

Maybe the Catholic Church is teaching you to not accept some of God’s answers?

Catholics clearly support the THEORY of evolution, which is anti-Biblical.

And whats really wild about all this is that Catholics often use their teaching re “evolution”, and related teachings of anti-Adventist cults, even going against their own church’s teachings on the Sabbath, to refute the Sabbath!

CAtholics do not support any scientific theories at all. Catholicism is a faith system not a science system.

And you need to learn what Theory means in a scientific context.

Your “faith system” appears to fully support the “science system” of evolution - albeit, “theistic evolution.” Perhaps you have some official Catholic documentation that would prove me wrong?

The document does not contain any requirement for Catholics to support anything. We are allowed to weigh the evidence and draw our on conclusions, so long as we do not choose one that contradicts the concepts required as a Christian, such as God creating everything or the soul of Humans.

Silly question, why does it matter? If the SDAs are correct, Rome is the Whore of Babylon and we are all damned anyway. Let us keep our defiant attitude.

Hi Protestant101,

How fortunate for you that I’m a Libertarian and therefore do not believe in suing someone for libel. Which is not to say that you committing libel with your slanderous lying drivel should not be condemned; merely I am saying that you have a right to say and believe whatever you want even if it is a lie and even if it is directed against me.

While I did read about Dudley M. Canright in an undergraduate SDA church history class at Columbia Union College (a SDA college for those of you unfamiliar with these institutions) in the late '70s, I have never read any of his writings. And believe me, the text for that class did not make him look good.

I have never heard of Dale Ratzlaf nor read any of his writings.

No where in any thread of these forums have I quoted either of these two gentlemen, nor have I quoted any writings from any “anti-SDA” website. And when I do quote or reference something I provide links, sources, and quotes. My posts in that regard speak for themselves.

If you are so sure, as you appear to be, that I am merely parroting anti-SDA books and websites with my questions, then provide some proof. Provide some URL links to my questions on those other websites. Provide copied quotes of those questions from the books you’ve read them in along with the book’s title, author, and page numbers on which my questions can be found.

The questions I have asked are mine. If they sound similar to questions that others have asked SDAs, then I think that lends itself more to the apparent and obvious weaknesses in SDA doctrines, than it does to anyone who questions them.

God bless all!!!

"There has also, always been more than one “Church” in existence. While the Bible doesn’t specifically name any one denomination, it clearly reflects more than one organization as being a “Church.”

Um, clearly there were NO denominations specifically named because THEY DIDN’T EXIST. Therefor you can only conclude there was ONE CHURCH.

Gosh what a no-brainer. (The concept, not the poster of the opposing concept.)

Could be both actually! 😃 He didn’t reply to my post. May be making thigns up agaoin or reading one of Prophet White’s books!

Thanks for the comment to my questions re Catholic teachings on evolution, and the literal creation account. Can you point me to any official Catholic sources that show detailed explanation of Catholic doctrine of creation being literal or symbolic?

Adventists do not teach that all Catholics are “damned.” But, FYI, I like your “defiant attitude!” It keeps me on my toes!

To those who commented on my “one Church” comment. That was a parenthetical comment to a post someone made, and not really intended by me as a topic of discussion for this thread. But I will read, with interest, any further comments to that idea I expressed.

In the meantime, I will look forward to any and all answers to my main questions for this topic about Catholics and evolution, and the creation account in Genesis being literal or not. Question # 1 of the six questions I quoted above is the current point we are at. Can anyone point me to what Catholics officially teach on this? I would like to read it for myself.

Thanks! 👍

We are allowed by the Church to choose the one that fits our perception of the evidence. There is no official position one way or another. IT is like that so we do not get bogged down in minutia.

CAtholics do not support any scientific theories at all. Catholicism is a faith system not a science system.

And you need to learn what Theory means in a scientific context.
Here is a further comment/question to the first of the 6 questions I am trying to address here:

I have here a copy of “The New American Bible.” It is called “The Saint Joseph Edition,” and this is authorized by “The Board Of trustees, of The Confraternity of Christian Doctrine.”

There are many “helps for Bible reading” within this volume, and I would like to address one of these “helps” that are found for some of the text we are looking at in Genesis.

I would like to say a parenthetical comment here though that I am surprised to see what I have been reading in this obviously Catholic version of the Bible. Catholics on this board have been very critical of Adventists and others for “writing their own Bible;” yet they feel so very free to turn around and do it themselves with The New American Bible. It has definitely been conjured up to fit Catholic specific doctrines.

To recap, question number one reads thus:
How is there light and darkness, evening and morning for 3 days before the sun and stars are created on the 4th day?
This malicious question, originally invented by early anti-Adventists is based on fraud and deception of the worst kind. It asks about the light and darkness in a way that suggests “the sun and the stars were created on the fourth day.” Sticking only to the Bible text itself, as the poster of the questions has asked, the Bible doesn’t say that at all! So the question itself is based upon a premise which is blatant falsehood.

We are told clearly in Gen.1:4 how that "God divided the light from the darkness…It doesn’t come right out and say that He created it at that time; it just says He “divided” the light and the dark, meaning that it had to be somehow already in existence, in order to “divide” it on that first day.

As I have already stated:

The real answer to question #1 is because God says there was.

In The New American Bible “helps” for Gen.1:5, the Catholic notes there read:
“In ancient Israel; a day was considered to begin at sunset. According to the highly artifical literary structure of Genesis 1:1-2,4a, God’s creative activity is divided into six days to teach the sacredness of the Sabbath rest, on the seventh day, in the Jewish religion.”
There are several falsehoods suggested by this “bible study help” but the first thing I would like to know is why would Catholic leaders herein call this beautiful Bible text in Genesis “highly artifical literary stucture?” That seems like a very defiant attitude towards the holy scriptures. The Catholic use of this phrase “highly artificial” is absolutely wrong!! And certainly, it is so far, unproven!

Here is a further comment/question to the first of the 6 questions I am trying to address here:

As I have already stated:

God said there was “evening and morning” on those first three days, so there was:

Do you ever read and contemplate an entire text of scripture? Let’s look at all the verses regarding these two days.

If you read what and how God creates each day in the creation story, He always begins His creation by saying “Let there be”.

On Day One: Genesis 1:2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

Notice that He created Light on the 1st day by saying “Let there be light”. And notice that “light” in verse 3 is singular.

*On Day Four: Genesis 1:14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so. 16 **God made two *great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.

Notice that He created Lights on the 4th day by saying “Let there be lights”. And notice that “lights” in verse 14 is plural. Verse 16 says that God made two great lights to govern the day and night, and he also made the stars. (the scipture quotes above are from the NIV…but the singular and plural shows up in all the other versions I’ve looked at including your King James Version and The New American Version ) Read the verses in the Bible, not the Helps…the Helps are not the scriptures…nothing has been changed in the scriptures in any of the versions…you are just not reading the scriptures prayerfully or carefully.

The greater light (the sun) and the lesser light (the moon) and the stars were created on the 4th day…ACCORDING TO WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS.

And that was my question number 1…how do you explain that taking a literal interpretation of 7, 24 hour days in the creation story.

I don’t feel that you have answered my question number 1, but I will not continue to ask you to answer it."

God bless all!!!

OK Patrick; I will humor you for a bit with some more of my “drivel and lies.”

You cannot escape from what those notes say. They are officially approved by the highest Catholic authorities. There is no forgetting what your own church leaders have written, and for you to try and skip out on an explanation of those, is to reveal the true cult-nature of your questions and your “answers.” Denying that you know the originators of these malicous questions is only showing your serious lack of knowledge on Adventist history, and doctrinal development - which you keep saying you are an authority on.

You have fiddled around semantically with plural and singular uses in the Bible of the Word “light” or “lights” and then you try to stretch that into saying that it all means the days of creation were not literal 24 hour days. We are told clearly in Gen.1:4 how that “God divided the light from the darkness…” It doesn’t come right out and say that He created it at that time; it just says He “divided” the light and the dark, meaning that it had to be somehow already in existence, in order to “divide” it on that first day.

But, my point remains intact. There is no escape from the fact that the Bible says clearly, that on the first three days of creation, there was “morning and evening.” Are you denying that? Maybe you can’t explain that; but then you can’t explain the resurrection either - yet we know that both are so because God said it was. You keep saying that your question 1 was not answered; but the fact is clear that we have answered, you just don’t like the answer. We didn’t follow your little script, and concede to the confusion you are attaching to scripture.

And, you haven’t answered any of my questions about your question #1.

Patrick, the originator of the 6 questions I stated in one of my first posts here appears quite unwilling to actually dig deeper into the nebulous topics suggested by his “questions,” but I feel that it is worth continuing here anyways.

In summary, lets examine these 6 questions, one by one. As soon as the first one is discussed a bit, I will be happy to move onto the 2nd one.

Question: 1.

The real answer to your question #1 is because God says there was. God said there was “evening and morning” on those first three days, so there was:

We are told elsewhere in Scripture: “by faith we understand…” and this is certainly one of the deciding factors here for this question about how there could be “light and darkness” “evening and morning” for three days before God set the sun and stars in place on the fourth day. Gen.1:7 tells us that “God set them in the firmament of the heaven;” not precluding a source of light being possible on the first three days of creation.

But - there is nothing in the text to siuggest that any such “source of light” existed. It has no other function than to explain how the sun was not created until day four; & that question can be answered without introducing a “source of light” that does not exist outside the mind of a reader who has invented it.

If we are going to interpret the Bible, we have to interpet what is in the text, not introduce fantasies of our own 😦 into the text. 😦

Genesis has nothing to say about evolution - the controversy is a modern one, which is utterly irrelevant to the ancient creation accounts; the composers of these were not bothered with our questions, but with their own; to inflict our concerns on the texts is as insane as inflicting our concern on any other ancient text: Herodotus was interested in the Persian-Greek war - it would be lunacy to insist he must have something to say about the Spanish Armade of 1588, or the theology of Melanchthon (whom you mention); but this lunacy is what the Biblical texts are subjected to. 😦 An alien might not unreasonably suppose that no book was so hateful to Christians as the Bible, if he were to see the tortures it is subjected to so that it might speak to us about what we want to hear from it. 😦 😦

Creationism & evolutionism can be debated - but not supported or rejected by the Biblical texts; the question is one involving the sciences, but not the Bible.

Dear Protestant101:

Throughout this thread you have trying to push a literal translation of Genisis, which is not the Catholic way. The Church teaches that the bible is without error in manners of salvation. Since there are two stories of creation, they are taken as stories each with truths and messages of salvation. God created to world, created man and woman out of a pure act of love. There is much more that can be taken form the readings, the fall, God’s forgiveness for example.
The Church also does not reject science. But through faith and reason, it teaches it always leads back to God.

Peace,
FAB

Protestant 101,
This may be a dumb question, but you do understand that Bible Commentaries are not dogmatic in the Catholic Faith? Even if is has the impramature and the nihil obistat, that does not mean I must accept it. That only means that it was printed under permission from a bishop and is free of things that are in opposition of the faith.

Hi Protestant101!
OK Patrick; I will humor you for a bit with some more of my “drivel and lies.”
uhhh…just for the record…I don’t find your drivel and lies humorous. So you don’t need to continue with them for my sake.

I have never once claimed to be an “authority” on Seventh day Adventism anywhere in my postings since I first joined here back in the spring.

That is a title of honor you continue to bestow upon me…but I have never made that claim.

I have said that I am a former SDA, who studied to be a SDA minister, received a BA in Theology from a SDA college, was an elder, gave Bible studies, preached often, and participated in many ministries of the SDA churches I belonged to.

I hope that clears it up for you so you do not feel obligated to continue to call me an “authority” on the SDA church. I have never made that claim.

You continuously request “official Catholic teachings” in just about every post you make. Read the Catechism of the Catholic Church…many of your questions will be answered OFFICIALLY!!👍
You have fiddled around semantically with plural and singular uses in the Bible of the Word “light” or “lights” and then you try to stretch that into saying that it all means the days of creation were not literal 24 hour days. I never “fiddled around” with the semantics of the scriptures. I quoted them to you and pointed out what they said because you obviously did not read what they said. If you are not willing to read what those texts say, that is up to you.

My Question 1 was how do you explain what is clearly stated in the Bible, regarding the 1st day and the 4th day, given your belief that each day is a literal 24 hour period.

Read those passages in the Bible that you are holding in your hand…there is no way I could have “fiddled” with what your Bible says.
But, my point remains intact. There is no escape from the fact that the Bible says clearly, that on the first three days of creation, there was “morning and evening.” Are you denying that?
No I am not denying that at all. I don’t believe that my Questions denied that either.
I have no “little script” (unless you now think that I wrote Genesis chapters 1 and 2, which I can confirm with confidence that I did not write:thumbsup: ).

I quoted the complete scriptures regarding the 1st and the 4th days of creation from Genesis chapter 1. Any confusion attached to that is from your own thought processes.

God bless all!!!

Ohhhhhhh now I understand your confusion.

You keep starting with verse 4.

Genesis 1: 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

By golly it does come right out and say that God created light at that time!!!

Whew…so simple and it was there all the time!!!

God bless all!!!
