How does being a catholic affect the way they carry out business as compared to other religion or non-catholics

I will tell you this, as a tradesman many times I have walked away from deals I thought were wrong…I have credited money on contracts when I did not do the work because I was able to take short cuts. I spoke the truth to people who wanted work done, which essentially was unnecessary because their house was safe. I also would bring up prayer to my fellow workers when I wanted to make a decision or needed help in a difficult position. I also would try my darndest no to use profanity. And the most important thing…unless it was an emergency, I don’t work on Sunday. I do ministry instead.

I think being Catholic should affect the way you live, not just in the business world. Remember more is caught than taught. People do watch you, particularly if you confess Christ. I like stbruno’s comments and that’s pretty practical real world stuff. The JPII link is really teling how we must let Christ transform us completely if we follow Him–that would include our every activity as well as our minds

hmm… thanks alot=] tat would be very helpful for my project… i hope to hear more from all of u and help answer my other posts if possible=] thanks

Well…as a business owner…I would say that since becoming Catholic, I have extended far too much grace to my employees. I’ve spent way too much time confessing my thoughts about some of my employees…and sometimes I think that it would be just easier to be a … you know what … and just fire them all.

I’ve had more patience than most employers would have had … but I do have a limit and I’m almost there…

In general Catholics have a strong work ethic and believe in being fair both as an employee and an employeer. That is we give a fair wage for good work and work a full day for a full day’s pay and do not cut corners on quality or waste time since this is cheating somone and is a sin.

Also we are more morally minded and focused on ethics. If somone asks us to do things that are unethical (e.g. cheating a client on their billing) we are obligated to not cooperate with that and to try “do the right thing” while keeping the peace. We are not supposed to call in sick to receive sick-pay if we are not really sick etc.

Of course not everyone is “perfect” and some Catholics are better than others. But I know of one past non-religious employeer who made it a point to recruit Catholics (without telling them that since it is illegal to prefer one class over another) over non-Catholics since he knew that we have a reputation for working harder and better and are generally more stable and reliable than most other groups of people. In the USA Catholics have a good reputation for being better educated and schooled than non-Catholics which makes us more sought after in general. But these things are not officially recognized or admitted to since the USA labor laws make it illegal for employers in most cases to choose one person over another based only on their religious affiliation. But a good recommendation and reputation is worth more to an employeer and many other things.

On the other hand there are people who hate Catholics because these people might believe an opposing faith and will sometimes discriminate against hiring Catholics out of hatred and contempt.

So it is hard to assess what the pragmatic net effect is. But in general employers like a person with good morals and values who are dependable. This is usually an advantage to The Christian in general (not just Catholics). But Catholics in my opinion are general believed to be very dependable employees and bond well and perform well in work teams since we are taught to get along with people - even hard to work with people. I don’t have any objective data to give you here but know this from first hand accounts from “behind closed door” meetings in my own experience. Perhaps this will give you some ideas to go research objective performance data and demographic based job performance data.

Good Luck,
James
