 Catholics are Christians Edwin. Have you considered that they are trying to convert you not because they “know they are not Christians” but they doubt you are?

God Bless,
Maria

Hi Maria,
I am just as amazed and confused and to speak out (angry) that people in these places are being taught such rubbish. Believe me, if you ask if they are Christians , say they are working at a christian school, they willl say no. They say they are Catholics. Only one whose English was pretty good tried to convert me to Catholism. She was very worried when I told her I was a Christian.
Another important aspect is to find out who is teaching this stuff? Where does it come from?

It truly is hard to say. Some Catholics are just “cultural” catholics. They are not walking in truth and light. They don’t know Christ.

Others say no because they want to firmly establish that they are Catholic. I personally do not understand this reasoning, but a few on the board have said it the same way.

I personally say if asked if I am Christian, I say " yes, I go to the Catholic Church. "

This person who was worried may be worried because in the Catholic Church we teach that although those who are not *official *members of the Catholic Church can be saved, your immortal soul is in more danger than practicing Catholics because of the wonderful gift of the Sacraments given to us by God to help us grow closer to Him.

I would liken this to your concern when you think people do not know and understand the Holy Spirit. If they seem not to understand or know the Holy Spirit, you doubt they can truly be Christian. Many Catholics doubt and wonder how you can truly know Christ if you do not receive the Christ in Holy Communion.

And part of is just bad teaching. While Catholic Christians believe that the Official teachings of the Catholic Church will be kept free from error because the promises of God,(1Tim3:15 among others) this does not prevent poor teachers from not teaching the gospel.

Unfortunately, there were many bad teachers for about 50 years in the Catholic Church. Teachers who have taught the “rules” (when to sit knell etc.) but haven’t taught who Christ is.

God Bless,
Maria

Any Catholic who would allege that the church is not Christian needs some very serious teaching to correct that foolishness. Most of the time that is the result of having listened to n-C evangelism, who tell them the wrong things. I was told the very same bunk by the n-Cs that I was in church with for over 34 years and I resent it now.
Pax vobiscum,

Anyone who thinks that Catholics are not Christian are hateful bigots.

A former co-worker stated “I used to be Catholic and now I am Christian” and she grew up in Columbia going to Catholic schools. She said they forced her to get confirmed for fail some class in school. I responded to her that “Catholics ARE Christian.” Since we are not allowed to discuss religion at work too much, the conversation pretty much ended there.

More recently my cousin who lives about 15 miles away from me, started going to some Protestant church and asked me if the church I attend is Christian. I am pretty sure he knows I go to Catholic church. Some of his friends who work on 4-H projects with my Aunt and Uncle go to my Catholic parish (I have run into them from time to time though they are not really my friends). I just told him “Not only is the Catholic Chruch christian, it’s the first Christian denominaiton”.

He just kind of responded “Ok, but maybe you can go along with us (him his live in girlfriend who share a child) to (their) church some Sunday morning”. In a “duh why didn’t I think of that then?” moment, I should have invited him to go along with me. Instead, the converstion just ended there.

I hope, I really do, that Protestants don’t worship the physical bible itself, as opposed to the Word of God. Yet I have a sinking feeling that some of them do partake of this frightening idolatry.

Please, please defend the faith, my friends. Our faith is deeply rooted in Christ.
as they continue to read the word, and continually bump into the "don’t go there… that’s catholic!"constrictions upon their thinking and belief…the more shallow will drift into bibleolatry and drift away from the dynamic lifechanging walk with Jesus the Word.

Yes, we are Christians. Unfortunately, there is a number of Latino Catholics are lead away from Catholicism. Interesting note, Latinos make up the majority of Catholics. I wonder if this somehow ties with the fact that these Latino Catholics don’t think they are not Christians. No wonder there non-Cs missionaries in Latin America trying to convert Latinos into Christians.

Yes, I like that … and it is true! 👍

I know so many catholic’s that don’t recognize that they are Christians. Have you ever experienced this with anyone. I remember My old hair dresser made the comment, or I grew up Catholic, but now I am a Christian.

I helped her understand where she went wrong in her sentence! 👍
That’s like asking, “Are you a Protestant or a Christian?” or like asking a woman, “Are you a mother or are you a parent?”

If you tell someone that you have a Ford Mustang, would you expect them to ask you if you have a car?

Yes, Catholics are Christians. That doesn’t mean I agree with some of their ceremonies or some of the things done not found in scripture, but I don’t question their salvation.

…though, many of them often question mine, or think it “lesser”.

ScottH- the non-Roman Catholic Christian.

Scott,

Do you mind my asking what ceremonies Catholics do with which you don’t agree?

I was going to ask ScottH the same question! 👍

Well… we’ve been down this road before. There’s nothing to be gained from bringing them up again. I will say that I’m totally not comfortable with the Mary reverence- and I’ve been that way since I was in Guadalupe’ Mexico in 1991. Although I will say that I think American Catholics excercise much more discretion than their South American brethren - particularly about this issue.

But what ceremonies - you can’t possibly mean the liturgy as it is firmly grounded in the Holy Scripture.

And of course we are Christians. For heavens sake only someone who has never read the Catholic Catechism would say we are not Christians.

The truth of the matter is, if anyone attended Mass and really, really new scripture, they would feel right at home!

This, alone, makes me laugh, when I hear non-Catholics say the Mass isn’t biblical. That is proof they do not know their scripture! 👍

Hi Scott,

Thanks for answering the question. I’m sorry if you felt the question to be a repeat. I don’t believe we’ve met before, so I’m unaware of your feelings on the subject.

Through your use of the term reverence, I’m guessing you’ve also heard the response that goes through the various levels of worship, Latria being reserved for God alone and an infinitely lesser level of worship (the inadequacy of the English language applying the same term to both situations) being used for Mary.

Since your concerns mentioned focus on Guadalupe, I suspect you’ve experienced a Marian Procession where a statue (and probably various banners) were paraded through the streets with much joy and adjulation. It’s a festival to honor a very special lady. I can see that to someone completely unfamiliar with our appreciation for the woman who, when a young girl was willing to take on the risk of being stoned to death, might feel uncomfortable with the procession. I suspect that if I had encountered such a procession in 1991, I too might have found myself more than a bit uncomfortable. But were I to have the opportunity now, as I know and understand my faith better, to participate in such a procession, I would welcome the chance.

I’m glad to see you here. Enjoy your browsing through our Catholic Thoughts.

God Bless,

CARose

I have always found this question deeply offensive.😦 I was gob smacked when first asked this by a student minister of some protestant background, as I was offended when asked if the catholic church reads the bible.:ehh: It is such a ludicrous question it begs the question what is taught to those not of the catholic faith about the RCC…evidently not much in the way of truths …

:hmmm:

It is tremendously offensive … yet so many protestants were Catholics and they left, never knowing that they were Christian.

How sad … we all need to do more to evangalize our own Catholics.
