Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles
A pro-life Catholic group is calling for the resignation of Los Angeles Archbishop Cardinal Roger Mahony after security guards at the city’s main cathedral threatened to arrest students protesting at inauguaration ceremonies held there for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

The American Life League said that about a dozen students planned to attend the ceremonies for Villaraigosa – a Catholic who supports abortion rights – and peacefully protest with shirts and signs that read: “You can’t be Catholic and pro-abortion.”

Cathedral security guards blocked the students’ from entering and threatened them with arrest.

“It is an outrage that an event honoring a pro-abortion Catholic public figure that openly supports the killing of the preborn would occur at Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral,” said American Life League President Judie Brown. “It is even more shameful that Cardinal Mahony and others would attempt to censor faithful Catholic students from proclaiming the truth.”

The young adults are part of American Life League’s 2005 Crusade for Life walks. The students are trekking from San Diego to Sacramento to spread their message of the incompatibility of being a Catholicism and supporting abortion. American Life League is calling for the immediate resignation of Mahony “in light of his continued defiance of church teaching.”

“His coddling of pro-abortion Catholic public figures in California is beyond reproach and should not be tolerated by the hierarchy of the Catholic Church,” said Brown.

The young activists eventually were allowed inside the cathedral but only after the Los Angeles Police Department intervened.

“How ironic that the cathedral security guards wanted to arrest the students and the LAPD had to step in and point out that such an act would be unconstitutional,” said Brown. “The truths of the church will always stand strong, regardless of who attempts to stifle them. Even a cardinal.”

Hello

I would prefer to here a statement from the Cardinal before making any comments on this situation.

God Bless
Saint Andrew.

Cardinal Mohoney needs to get Benedict’s boot planted in his posterior…

Why the Vatican hasn’t moved him to another less powerful job, I do not know…but the LA diocese deserves better. :nope:

Needs to pull his head out of his 4th point of contact.

Not my job to deploy cardinals.

I’ll trust the pope will do the right thing.

Alan

It has been reported that another reason that the investigation of Pedophilia in the Los Angeles Archdioces. Is taking so long, besides the continuous delaying tactics of the Cardinal. Is the Liberal hollywood allies of the Cardinal are using their influence to protect him.Cardinal Mahony,it has been reported, is a darling of the leftwing Hollywood establishment. For his liberal views.

Can you provide any factual information for that story?

Its hard to keep track of the reports about Cardinal Mahoney. The realy pityful thing is.This lberal Cardinal has no compunction violating the constitutional Rights of good Catholics. The Anti-Abortion students were saved from arrest by the Los Angeles Police. Who told the Cardinals security guards they could be arrested for violating the students Constitutional Rights ! The students were escorted into the Cathedral by Los Angeles police. To make sure that the Roman Catholic Cardinal archbishop didn’t violate their Rights ! Now thats pityful and another example of the civil authorities having to rescue Catholics from their own church.

But that still doesn’t answer the question - you said earlier:

And I asked for a link to that particular post…

I personally don’t have a link but I think that a while back, I did see something like this written up in an article in the Los Angeles Times.

Google is your friend. There have been many more stories over the years, but this is the first link I could come up with.
The link you provided gives a review of what happened between Keating and the board of bishops – again, something I am familiar with, it does not however link to any story about the original content of the post in question and actually I believe, does not even mention Hollywood people.

The original post for which I requested a reference: “…It has been reported that another reason that the investigation of Pedophilia in the Los Angeles Archdioces. Is taking so long, besides the continuous delaying tactics of the Cardinal. Is the Liberal hollywood allies of the Cardinal are using their influence to protect him.Cardinal Mahony,it has been reported, is a darling of the leftwing Hollywood establishment. I am not trying to grill anyone here, but it would seem to me this is indeed a charge which I have never heard or read anywhere else, and no one I have mentioned it to has either.

If it was simply the opinion of the OP then that’s fine to say so but it should be posted as such I think.

I regret that I cannot quote where I heard about the Cardinals Hollywood allies. So much has been written about the Cardinal and his on going lack of cooperation with investigators. It becomes hard to keep track.
On the Keating business if you think about it.He wasn;t far from wrong.

Our job is to be obedient to our priests. Their job is to obey their bishops, and the bishops’ job is to obey the Holy Father. Wherever the cardinals come in there, I don’t suppose they report to us.

If we follow St. Teresa, (I think it was her) then she said she would not question the person who gives her the Eucharist, “if he were a demon incarnate.” You may think that of this priest, but you wouldn’t have caught her bad-mouthing her superiors, I don’t suspect.

Catholics have no business going public with a cry for a cardinal to quit. That’s up to the Holy Father.

Though I won’t join the chorus of demanding Mahoney’s departure, I for one won’t be the least bit dissapointed to see him gone.

Needless to say the guy who one day succeeds this Cardinal will inherit an archdiocese in practical spiritual ruin.
