Catholics don't teach true presence!?!

My father inlaw,(ex catholic) recently tried to tell me that the catholic church doesn’t teach true presence officially. He told me that “it may be popular around here”(northern PA) but its not everywhere else. Now I know he’s crazy but he was a catholic for 27 years and I’m amazed that he didn’t pick that up! 27 years! Man O man! So to prove that the church teaches the doctorine of true presence I sent him a link to the proper catechism page and he read it and it says a lot of big words that don’t mean anything!! Then he called Catholicism a cult and then I told him I was insulted and he said “your nuts!”

Advice?
 
:twocents: Alert! Tell him that if he’s going to disparage a teaching of the Catholic Church, at least call that teaching by it’s real name. “Real Presence”
 
**From the very beginning of the Church - the Catholic Church has taught the true presence. Read the early Church Fathers.

The issue is people do not hear the teaching for whatever reason.**

Just like the first people who heard it. -John:6:60. “this is a hard teaching, who can hear it?”

This is truly the best advice.

You showed him the official Catholic teaching - he read it - he rejected it - and did so in a manner that clearly demonstrates that he has no real interest in meaningful conversation.
His sole purpose is pretty obvious. He wants to “get a rise” out of you…Don’t take the bait…

Why are you letting yourself be bothered? Your FIL most likely knows he is wrong and is just telling you that to rile you!
There are no greater enemies of Holy Mother The Church than former Catholics- especially those who have gone over to Evangelical Protestantism. With regards to what your FIL told you, remember the old saying: “Consider the source”.
Don’t bite and give him the satisfaction that he upset you. That is what he wants!
At the risk of causing hate and discontent in your family, you might gently let your wife know what he is doing and suggest that he is doing it in an attempt to drive you two apart.
Let your wife know that ypu are insulted by his attack on your religion and until he apologizes to you, you want nothing more to do with him. I will bet that if your marriage is healthy, she will definately side with you.
 
I have argued with people before, and I can tell you what my biggest mistake was letting them keep on getting me upset, by making utterly false claims (and they knew it was false)…just to get my reaction. That was so, so very childish.

So, maybe your father in law is doing the same. Pray for him, and hope the lost sheep wandereth back to the shepherd.
 
Might I suggest you let the scriptures finish your debate with your FIL, presuming he hasn’t rejected the scriptures altogether as well.

Hebrews 6:
4For it is impossible for those who were once illuminated, have tasted also the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
5Have moreover tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
6And are fallen away: to be renewed again to penance, crucifying again to themselves the Son of God, and making him a mockery

I agree, your F-I-L is stirring you up big time. He knows the truth but doesn’t want to commit himself to living the Catholic faith. He obviously loves stirring you though.
 
All you have to do is enter a Catholic church to know the Real Presence! That is what first drew me to Catholicisim. I acutely felt the presence of God…unlike anything I felt in a protestant church. It wasn’t until later that I learned of the Real Presence.

Don’t let your FIL bother you. He probably didn’t like being proved wrong.
Pray for his return home.

I always ask people to define what they mean, when they make silly statements like that!

First - I would suggest that “abnormal or bizarre practices” is in the eye of the beholder. I always thought that making a “peanut butter, sweet pickle and mayonnaise” sandwich was an abnormal and bizarre practice…My wife thought it perfectly normal…😃

Second - “abnormal or bizarre practices” is no where contained in the definition of “cult”…

I would advise praying for him. Pray the Rosary for him. The Rosary is one of the most powerful prayers we have other than the Holy Mass.

Actually I think if one were to look back into older writings I believe that they will find the word “cult” used for certain groups even within the Church.
