The Council Fathers at Vatican II gave a strict warning to Catholics, which is every bit as applicable today as it was 50 years agoGood post!![]()
Indeedā¦the Council Fathers pay tribute to non-Catholics and remind the lay faithful that all of us have much that we can learn and be edified by those who are disciples of the Lord Jesus but who are not in communion with the Roman See.All the Churchās children should remember that their exalted status is to be attributed not to their own merits but to the special grace of Christ. If they fail moreover to respond to that grace in thought, word and deed, not only shall they not be saved but they will be the more severely judged.
Catholics must gladly acknowledge and esteem the truly Christian endowments from our common heritage which are to be found among our separated brethren. It is right and salutary to recognize the riches of Christ and virtuous works in the lives of others who are bearing witness to Christ, sometimes even to the shedding of their blood. For God is always wonderful in His works and worthy of all praise.
One of my great disappointments about Catholic Answers is how few people here have the Holy Seeās mind about issues of either Christian Unity or contemporary inter-religious dialogue. That is very sad and, actually, inexcusableā¦particularly in this age when this information is available at the touch of a button; it is an indictment of those who do not make the mind of the Holy See their own.Nor should we forget that anything wrought by the grace of the Holy Spirit in the hearts of our separated brethren can be a help to our own edification. Whatever is truly Christian is never contrary to what genuinely belongs to the faith; indeed, it can always bring a deeper realization of the mystery of Christ and the Church.
