I have been wondering for quite awhile, who started the belief that if you are Catholic you go to Hell? And if no one knows does anyone know when this belief surfaced?

Catholics are the number one leading denomination in the world, estimating at 1.5 BILLION people. There are bound to be people, envious of this, and as Jesus said they will hate you because of me and what I stand for.
There are some Protestant sects that think the pope is the anti-Christ and that all Catholics are doomed. If they only realized, might be the other way around.

The next time you hear it ask them to show you in the bible where it say’s is. They can’t!

In order for a sin to be a “Mortal sin” 3 conditions must exist:
- Grave and serious Matter
- Knowledge that it is a Grevious Mortal sin issue
- Freewill desire to do the act anyway. **

At death, all of the Truth will be made known and everyone will KNOW it. At that time, all will be members of the universal Church, the Body of Christ, save those who decided that hell was worth a little pleasure on earth.

Wow, what a simplistic and immature answer.
Common sense and faith are only opposed in those who desire them to be. It does work both ways. We have intellect and reason. Assuming that there is a God, why would he create something in men that drove them from him? He would not.
There are reasons that someone would not believe and not be damned. They may be unable to learn the Truth of the faith. They may have invincible ignorance. That is an inability to ever take the next step in conversion because of a blockage in their logic.
Here it is in a nutshell. God gives all of us access to enough grace to save us. We have the choice to accept that grace or not to. If we choose not to, we are choosing sin over God. At that time, we are choosing hell.
How about a real world example: a man is given the choice to have an affair on his wife or not. He keeps going back and forth on it, until he actually does it. Right after the act, her husband busts in and shoots him. He had no time to repent. Now, this man ends up in hell. Did common sense send him there? Not at all. In fact, common sense would have prevented him from cheating. It was the fact that he said a little on the side was more important than God that landed him in hell.

I guess we think a bit alike: a month ago I started a thread called "Protestants are going to hell … "
Without trying to p(name removed by moderator)oint an exact time, I think it’s safe to say that this belief predates the Reformation.
In particular, Catholics and Orthodox have been divided since 1054 A.D.; I’m sure that, somewhere between the 11th and 16th centuries there were some Catholics who believed that the Orthodox were all going to hell, and conversely some Orthodox who believed that the Catholics were all going to hell.

Thats funny I,m talking to a person who was banned from this board and some how got my email address and is now senting me mail trying to keep me from going to hell,she said ALL Cathloic are living in darkness and are going to hell and she also said Our God is the pope and not Jesus Christ. She is a real nut job and I can see why they kick her off of here,she also said we have no apostolic succession that it ended with the last apostle,its a sin to go to a priest for the forgivnest of our sins and I gave her the verse Jn 30-22 ant think you give her from the bible she has a dif interpret of the verse,O well it takes all kind

I believe that this statement became popular during the Protestant Reformation. The Catholic Church and the breakaway churches took turns telling each other that would go to hell for believing what they do. Since only God knows who is going to utilmately end up there, and we have every means to avoid it, I am not too concerned when I hear it.

the RCC is not a denomination… it is THE Church… all the others are denoms.
as far as “other way around”… very true but many non-Catholics will get to Heaven as many Catholics miss the boat… (about 54%?)
anyway, even if a Protestant gets to Heaven… s/he will, according to some reliable source i can’t now recall… get more time in Purgatory than the Catholic… because most Protestants don’t think they have to do any purging… they think Jesus did everythihg on the Cross… Well, there was one thing Jesus did not do on the cross: He didn’t make our decisions for us… He didn’t take anyone’s free will away… He didn’t change the nature of sin and the awful consequences it causes to a soul…

Anyone who leaves the Catholic Church knowing that it is the True Church WILL go to hell.Only those who do so and are ignorant of that fact have a CHANCE of salvation.The statement you heard was quite accurate.
