Catholics in China and contraception

Is it so shocking that even in modern times, people might be persecuted for following what they know to be right? Even if the family was under the threat of death, they could not use ABC, ever. Two wrongs do not make a right.

No, 2 wrongs do not make a right, but God is not going to send a couple to Hell for practicing ABC with the threat of forced abortion hanging over their heads. The worst evil here is abortion and it would be an almost unforgivable sin to continue having sex and possibly become pregnant with the knowledge that your child may be murdered. Now, objectively speaking, the best choice is no sex at all, but I honestly don’t believe that God considers it a mortal sin for a couple in China under these circumstances to practice ABC and personally, I think it’s thinking like this that has people NOT practicing ABC, having sex anyway and then just getting the forced abortion because hey, the sin is the state’s and not theirs, right? In this scenario, whatever needs to be done to save lives is the better choice. If a couple is not going to live as brother and sister, then they need to practice NFP and/or ABC. We’re talking about saving lives here. The better choice is the one that ends with less dead babies, period. Philosophizing on mortal sin and objective morality is exactly the kind of legalistic mumbo-jumbo that Jesus was against in light of basic Christian kindness.

I agree. I do wonder at the secrecy of the Chinese authorities. After all, not even the great Pope John Paul II could visit this state.
However, in a somewhat ironic twist of fate, I imagine that the strength of Faith of Chinese Catholics must be very strong considering the daily hardships they face. I think that should give us, in our relatively comfortable Western society, pause for reflection and grateful prayer.
