Catholics in Christian Music?

It’s incredible how big christian music has gotten. While pondering this I realized that of all the famous singers and bands, I can’t think of one who’s Catholic, which seems very odd, maybe they’re keeping it quiet? I can think of Aaron Neville off the top of my head, but he’s not really that popular anymore. You guys know of anyone?
 
Rachel Lampa is Catholic though tends to take a more general-Christian spin on her music. Other than that I don’t really know of too many in mainstream contemporary Christian music. Crispin and Seven Sorrows are good Catholic bands but I don’t hear them on my local Christian radio station. There are many artists whom I would guess have a faith understanding similar to Catholicism based on their lyrics.

This isn’t necessarily Christian music, but what about Los Lonely Boys? I only know them from that one song “How far is Heaven?” which I like. The video actually has a prominant crucifix and also shows various statues of saints. I liked it a lot.
 
I am a native of Grand Point, Louisiana, which is mid way between New Orleans and Baton Rouge in St. James Parish, but have transplanted to southwest Mississippi.

By candlelight, in the coolness of the morning, on September 2, 2005, the 3rd day after Hurricane Katrina hit, I wrote the words to this song. Being without power at my house, I drove 200 miles to my in-laws’ house where I re-recorded it on my Digitech GNX4.

For 9 days, we were without power and water near Meadville, Mississippi, but I am thankful for the things I do have, among them, my family, my friends, a house and a job.

Yes, I am Catholic. I attend St. Ann’s in Meadville, Mississippi, along with about 25 others plus about 10 evacuees from the coastal area hit by Katrina.

I have also noticed that the Christian music industry seems to consist mostly of other denominations. What can we do to change that? A recent article stated that there were over 1 billion Catholics worldwide. Are we lacking in producing good music? (my song isn’t an example of the best that Catholics can offer – just want to get more people to hear the timely message).

Does anyone from Seven Sorrows still post?

I downloaded their songs for my hubby and me…Tim loves rock music and I think he’ll really like it…I just wanted to tell them they have some great songs!

The bass player teaches at my daughters school and the lead singer is a DJ at WBGL christian contemporary radio station. You can buy their cd’s from their website.
 
One thing’s for sure—any Catholic musician who wants to have their music played on mainstream Christian stations sure as h___ better not mention Mary, the saints or the Eucharist in any of their songs. It would be professional suicide.

The ONLY way Catholic Contemporary Music is going to be played on radio IS to have an ALL Catholic Music station (OR a Network of stations, OR a Satelitte Radio Station). As the central point to start a network.

Yet, as an industry, we Catholics are Light-years behind the Protestant demoninations in gettting the music ‘out there’.

Unless you have streamlinking on the Internet, you can listen to ALL Catholic music (but you don’t have the ability to have it in the car or outside the home).

One Internet broadcast resource I found is:

The person who started this station online lives a couple of miles from me. (We met once).

Maybe we need to pray and hope someone would be ‘called’ to start an ALL Catholic Music Radio Network…I know there wouldn’t be a lack of music to feature on the network!

I haven’t seen a post from Seven Sorrows in a while. Their lead singer and guitarist left the band, so they’re trying to find a new singer/guitarist. If you know of any Catholic guitarists/singers, please let them know about Seven Sorrows! Their web site’s at www.sevensorrows.com
