Catholics in public life must adhere to Catholic teachings, says Prendegast

Exactly, which while I’m not for free abortions for everyone either is the same thing.

I’m in the UK at the moment so I’ll use Parliment for convenience. Say I vote for an MP, who in this constituency holds a weekly “drop in” to hear what it is his constituent voters want.

Let’s say he’s a Catholic unaffiliated with a party (it does happen), an independent. What if for the next few weeks his voters come in saying “we want you to campaign for freer availability of abortions”.

It is his job and obligation to do this, if he does not he is cheating his voters. He receives a striped from parliament to do what they want. But of course, he’s a Catholic, so he can’t do it. Which means he can’t do the job of representing the desires and needs of his constituents.
I think I see what you’re saying. However, things in the states aren’t quite that bad where no Catholic could ever be elected given that all Catholic politicians have to be pro-life. If the entire population were about 80% pro-choice (such as they are in Nancy Pelosi’s district), there would indeed be fewer Catholics in office.

I kinda think the church wants to keep a sort of good relationship with Govt and the local cities, when they really should not be concerned about this at all.
Until the loss of this “good relationship” results in the loss of the church’s tax exempt status…and the property tax bill for those multi-million dollar church buildings start coming due.

I disagree. Republicans tend to be on the the pro life side and pro family, but they fail in some of their policies towards the poor. There is no perfect political party. If only we had someone true to all of the teachings of the Church. Oh wait, then he’d be a Pope. 😉
This is absolutely false. Catholics are must care for the poor, but Catholics are free to use prudential judgment about how best this care should be implemented. There is NO requirement that this care come from the government. And using the government to provide care does not alleviate or reduce the individual Catholic’s responsibility to provide care.

So NO, nothing in the Republican platform is contrary to the faith.

No one said they were perfect. however there is nothing in their platform or philosophy that is at odds with church teaching. the church neither endorses or opposes either parties approach to helping the poor.

if the Pope were true to all the teachings of the church he would never need to go to confession.

Betty the Church has suffered a long history of state’s thieving their property and buildings. In the long run it has been the Church that survives whereas the thieving state regimes disappear into the dustbin of history.

Good for him! 🙂

I especially like this:

The Ottawa archdiocese issued a statement May 16 on moral issues and communion with the Catholic Church in response to Trudeau’s statements.
“A person who takes a position in contradiction to the teaching of the Catholic Church on the value and dignity of human life from the moment of conception to the moment of a natural death, and persists in this belief, is not in communion with the Church’s values and teaching, which we believe faithfully transmit for today the teachings of Christ,” said the statement, which includes an extensive quote from Pope Francis’s Evangelii gaudium that says the “defence of unborn life is closely linked to the defense of each and every other human life.”
One may not dissent from these core teachings on life issues and be considered a Catholic in good standing,” the statement says

Who recently said that a public figure who dissents from core teachings–in a very blunt and public manner–is a “Catholic in good standing?” Give up???

The Archbishop Timothy Cardinal Dolan.

Let me say here that the response of the part of Cardinal Collins (Archbishop of Toronto) Archbishiop Prendegast (Archbishop of Ottawa) are in response to Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau’s new ultimatum that Pro-lifers need not apply.

This response should have been enacted by Cardinal Law for Ted Kennedy during the Bork nomination process in the 80s. Had the Cardinal followed the same steps that Cardinal Collins and Archbishop Prendegast with regard to Kennedy, then perhaps Cardinal O’Malley doesn’t have to give a PUBLIC Catholic funeral.
