Is it difficult to make a decent catholic life in Turkey with there being only about 35,000 Catholics out of almost 74,000,000 people there.

Try not to be discouraged and try to keep in the forefront of your mind, Matt. 18:20~“For wherever two or more are gathered together in my name, there I am in the midst of them.” Those of us that are here are also with you. I will continue to pray for my Catholic brothers and sisters in countries where Catholicism is not the predominant faith. Peace. :signofcross:

Let us not forget the Bishop who was ritually slaughtered by Islam in Turkey. Prayer and weapons will further the cause more than lofty prayers alone. Stop Jihad!

The Turkish state is generally considered laicist/secularist with somewhat stronger links to Islam still intact (Islamic authorities must be authorised by a Turkish religious office). Because of the link to Islam, Turkey does not know of institutions called ‘church’ which makes it virtually impossible for a Church to be recognised as legal.

And do not forget what our Syriac and Armenian brothers have had to suffer from under Turkish rule. Lots of animosities are going on between Muslims and Christians, as can be seen in the murder of a Bishop.

I do not want to judge Turkey, maybe at the end things turn out a lot better than I’ve portrayed them - and I do hope so. Just be aware of the historo-political situation.

Constantinople (Istanbul) is said to have a good number of Western and Eastern Catholic parishes.

I now have a better understanding of the situation, great thanks to the 3 posters up to this point.

Catholics? In turkey? It must get stuffy in there!

(I just had to LOL)

Very small. In 1920, 20 percent of the Turkish population was Christian.

Eastern, 2010:
Armenian Catholic, Archeparchy of Istanbul = 3450
Syrian Catholic Patriarchial Exarchate of Turkey = 2000
Chaldean Catholic Archeparchy of Diarbekir = 6219

Latin, 2005:
Latin Catholic Apostolic Vicariate of Istanbul = 15000
Latin Catholic Apostolic Vicariate of Anatolia = 4550
Latin Catholic Archdiocese of Izmir (Smirne) = 1350

New York Times, 2008 reported:
Orthodox in Turkey < 2500
