Teancum, You are a “Senior Member” here at this Site and you still don’t understand still have not learned has it not been told to you from the begining. lol

Of course Catholics are Christians!

The bible you have wether it be the king james or the later day saints bible is a watered down version of the Original Bible.

I say watered down by Martin Luther, who took 7 Gospels out from the ORIGINAL

Now if this water down version of the bible you Have makes you feel that you are a “Christian” now how much more of a Christian you would feel if you had the ORIGINAL?

Now who do you THINK compiled the ORIGINAL BIBLE? The early Church fathers who just happened to be CATHOLICS:thumbsup:

I know some about the CC. I was raising the question to see how common that perception held by another was.

Just a friendly correction. He didn’t take 7 gospels out, since there are only 4 to start with. I assume you are either talking about the Apocrypha, or the 4 NT books that he did not hold in as high a regard as the other books. Nevertheless, he translated all the books and included them in his translation.

On the OP’s subject, I consider Catholics my brothers and sisters in Christ, and consider it an outrage to claim they are not Christian. The claim is vile and un-Christlike.

It depends on the denomination. For me (being part of the Episcopal Church), I find a lot of Episcopalians are very respectful of the Roman Catholic Church and even respect the liturgical authority of RC clergy (one friend of mine says she respects the Pope in his position as Bishop of Rome). Some Protestants (especially Fundamentalists and certain Baptists) would proclaim loudly that Roman Catholicism is a heresy, a cult, whatever. I think a lot of Protestants probably just don’t think that much about the RCC (much like they probably don’t think much about other denominations within Protestantism), although they probably disagree with some Roman Catholic theology (as they disagree with the theologies of other Protestant denominations).

Prior to finding this site and getting involved in Anglicanism (which shares a lot of liturgy and some theology with Roman Catholicism), I really didn’t think that much about the RCC, although I thought they were theologically incorrect (even though I really didn’t know their theology…I admit it, I used to be a bit of a Fundamentalist…sorry).
Are you seeking the truth? Most fellow Christian denominations are in disagreement with the Catholic Church on what they heard not what they know.
Theologically incorrect! Well that’s a wide open statement and bet it is again on what you heard not what is fact?

I would hope I’m seeking the Truth. As I said earlier, I used to be a bit of a Fundamentalist and, yes, a lot of what I disagreed with the Roman Catholic Church about was theology that was not really Roman Catholic. Now, after reading about Roman Catholic theology (esp. on this site), there are still parts of it I disagree with, but it’s no longer a truly vitriolic disagreement (as in, I don’t think there is any RC theology that is actually sinful to believe in).

I should add that, in terms of the Episcopal Church and its views on Roman Catholicism, I think if someone has been Confirmed into the Roman Catholic Church, they are not re-Confirmed into the Episcopal Church, instead they are ‘received’ into the Church.

When I was Confirmed, there was one person in our group who was being ‘received’ (they had been Confirmed into a different Anglican province as a child), thus the Bishop did not lay hands on them, but instead shook their hand and officially and ecclesiastically welcomed them. Like I said, I believe we recognize the validity of RC Holy Orders, thus re-laying on of hands would not be necessary.

You are correct. Anyone confirmed by a bishop in Apostolic succession woud not be re-confirmed. That not being a possible action, any way.

**Luther’s first bible (or what pretended to be the bible, for he had amputated some of it’s members) came out in 1520. Now, will you believe it, there were exactly 104 editions of the bible in Latin before that date; there were 9 before the birth of Luther in the German language, and there were 27 in German before ever his own saw the light of day. Many of these were to be seen at the Caxton Exhibition in London, 1877; and seeing is believing. In Italy there were nore than 40 editions of the bible before the first Protestant version appeared, beginning at Venice in 1471; and 25 of these were in the Italian language before 1500, with the express permission of Rome. In France, there were 18 editions before 1547, the first appearing in 1478. Spain began to publish editions in the same year, and issued bibles with the full approval of the Spanish Inquisition (of course, Protestants will not believe this). In Hungary by the year 1456, in bohemia by the year 1478.
626 editions of the bible, in which 198 were in the language of the laity, had issued from the press, with the sanction and at the instance of the church, in the countries where she reigned supreme, before the first Protestant version of the Scriptures was sent forth into the world. 🙂 **

Catholics not Christian? What a bizarre idea. We are the original Christians. That is just way out there and I’ve never heard that before. Very strange.

Lucky you for not bumping into the sort of Evangelicals that advocate such nonsense! If and when you do, ask them what their church was doing in the year 1500. Be prepared for blank stares. 😃

I guess I have been lucky. That is just such a wild idea to me. I am dumbfounded to think that some people believe that Catholics are not Christians. Wow. I guess I’ve been living under a rock. I did grow up in a strong Catholic family and community and even today don’t know a lot of people of other faiths, a few Lutherans, a few Baptists. Other than that, I think most people I know are Catholics. Does that make me guilty of religionism (as in racism, sexism, agism) because my exposure to other religions is limited and I don’t really associate with folks of other religions? 😛

You have not been living under a rock. The fact that most of your associates are Catholic makes you guilty of nothing.

If you discriminated against people of other faiths, that would be a different question. We are obligated to be tolerant, but we are not obligated to deny our faith. Indeed, we are charged to give witness.

Just to bring you up to speed, there are evangelical sects that teach that Catholics are not Christian, that we believe in a different “Jesus” than they do, that Catholicism is a cult, that we worship idols and pray to Mary, and on and on. Unfortunately some very nice, but very gullible people buy into these lies. And they go out in search of “saving” Catholics because they have been taught to believe this is their Christian duty. There are such persons that participate on this forum. They come here to troll for converts. Don’t be among them.

No, no discrimination here. My SIL is a Lutheran, we have friends who are Baptists. All are very nice folks that we enjoy knowing. We go to trivia nights with our Baptist friends and are always very impressed on the details of the Bible that they know so well, right down to obscure names, relationships, geography, verses, etc.

I have heard that some people believe Catholics worship idols and also worship Mary. Wrong ideas, but I have heard of those thoughts before. A different Jesus, though, is a new one to me. Wow. That is just as out there as believing that Catholics are not Christians.

As far as anyone converting me, no chance there. I am a cradle Catholic and will remain a Catholic through eternity.👍 Hopefully, I will not be a damned Catholic, though 😃 My hope for salvation is in Him, not because I am so good, but because He is so good.

I come across more and more of those anti-Catholic types every single day. I am deeply afraid that it is on the rise. Do you guys think those people–the Jack Chick followers–are becoming more numerous?

I’m just wondering if this idea gets around much or if I just have run into some of the few protestants who hold this view?
It is a very ignorant opinion of someone to say that Catholics are not Christians. These folks have an obvious misunderstanding and or prejudice. For the most part, I believe it is just mainly something that they have heard and have probably heard for a long time and they are just continuing it without real knowledge of what they are saying and the evidence to back it up.

I’m not a scriptorian so I don’t know the chapter and verse in order to quote it perfectly but I believe (this is MY belief and is not Catholic doctrine) that those who say Catholics are a cult or that Catholics worship a different Jesus are those that Jesus said “Not everyone who calls me Lord, Lord will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven”.

Further, they are those to whom Jesus will say “behold I never knew you” on the last day. They do not draw people to Jesus, they push them away by their intolerance. I cannot believe that Jesus would condone this sort of thing. God loves everyone, even the sinner. He just doesn’t love SIN.

My problem with any people who think that way is that they are so exclusionary. Not just of me, but of everyone that doesn’t believe as they do, even if those people have never heard of Jesus That’s just silly!

Jesus came to save all of us. He died for ALL of us. He didn’t come to save a certain sect that attends a certain church. As Catholics, we have the comfort and confidence of knowing that our Church was founded by Jesus Christ and we follow all that He has commanded us to do. Other sects talk about Jesus, but they do not do as He has commanded. All their sects were founded by men, not Jesus.

I’ll take Jesus every time!! To me, this is a no-brainer!

Catholic bashing seems to be on the rise. I know our local rag of a paper, the only game in town, just LOVES to print anything that makes the Catholic Church look bad. They try to make our Archbishop Burke look like some kind of ogre when all he is doing is standing up for the Faith and the teachings of Holy Mother Church. I do get extremely weary of all that…nonsense:) (thought I’d choose a more charitable word, rather than the one I was thinking).

A Catholic is a Christian but a Christian is not always a Catholic.

Believe it or not, there are some who believe this and are taught this from their leaders. If they just study Christianity, they will find the only christians living for 1500 years from Jesus and the apostles were only Catholics.

Another misinformed teaching and belief from protestants and non catholics, claim that the Roman Catholic church is a denomination. How can you call the body of Jesus Christ a denomination? The Roman Catholic church is the fulfillment of the old covenant through Jesus Christ.

those are CC teachings many do not agree with them. However I do agree with you that catholics fit the basic definition of Christan quite well.

thank you for (calling it CC teaching,) for saying so, because that is what the bible teaches about the body of Jesus Christ and his church, and also Apostolic Tradition. That she is the body of Jesus Christ, not a denomination. See Ephesians4-6. Any other Christian body outside the catholic church has denominated from the body of Jesus Christ. For there is only One Church, One Body, One Lord, and One Baptism.
