I’m not joking, I’m just curious.

If humans colonize the moon and/or another planet, what would the Catholic Church do? To the best of my knowledge, there would still be only one Pope, right?

Thanks

Well, I must say as a geek I am pleased and fascinated by this question and shall enjoy answering it (to the best I am able).

I believe that there is SOME kind of pre-requisite to be able to make a new diocese. As an ex-Catholic, I believe you understand to some extent the function of a diocese. Assuming there were enough Catholics and priests, I would also assume the Vatican would appoint them a bishop and they would function as per usual, with a parish (or two, or three). The only difference would be…SPAAAAACE! Woohoo!

Yeah. I want to be a parishioner of the diocese of Venus. That would be…hot. snigger

The Catholic Church is universal so the Pope would still be pope wherever the Catholic Church was.

But not as hot as Mercury:D

While going to the Moon and colonizing it for long-term use sounds adventurous, I think with today’s technology there would be no problem keeping in touch with the Church on planet Earth.

A few questions come to mind: would the devil be allowed to go to the moon to bring misery and temptations? Would those on a long-term, possibly lifetime, home on the moon still have to pay income tax to the federal government?

I dreamed of colonizing the moon, and it was fun.

I was wondering about this, especially as regards the devil’s having been thrown down to earth (Rev. 12:9). Specifically, should that be interpreted to mean that he was exiled from the heaven-universe to this physical universe, or should it be interpreted literally, that he is confined to this specific planet, and if the latter interpretation is correct, does that mean that we could escape his temptations by colonizing the moon or other planets?

Someone answered, “Don’t worry, we’ll take him with us.” 😛

There’s a science fiction book that’s been out for many years now: “The Sparrow” I think it’s called–about a group of colonizers from planet earth led by a Jesuit. Interesting read.

I agree. I read it many many years ago. I forgot the title. THANKS.

I thought there were already several members of CAF, including Catholics, Orthodox, Protestants, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and atheists, who are on another planet.

Sorry, but I can’t be serious all the time.

Maybe God sent his son to other planets to die there too? Is is true that the responsable of space in vatican said that he is ready to evangilize and baptize them? Isn’t the existence of intelligent extra terrestriel life and species against religions specially the ones that concentrate on humans as they are the center of everything?

If there is other intelligent life, we don’t know whether they would need to be saved or not. Perhaps they did not fall like mankind did and therefore are free from Orginal Sin, thus not needing Jesus as a savior. However, if they did likewise fall then God probably had to redeem them as well.

I’m not sure, but I think that the OP was referring only to the movement of humans to other planets, not to the presence of aliens on other planets. We already know that there aren’t any aliens on the moon.

This part is about aliens, and as for the answer I’m not sure.

Who needs the devil when we have humans?

That was a honest question
And here is my honest (but not necessarily correct) answer. The devil pushed over the first domino in the garden, but thousands of years later it is dominos (not the devil) that are knocking over other dominos. I think he gets blamed for a lot of stuff that’s actually our fault, but I don’t think he minds.

I think the Pope is the leader of all Catholic humans, wherever they live, so he would continue to sit in the Vatican even if a new lunar diocese was open.

Did you know…

Gene Kranz, the Flight Director for Apollo 13 and other moon missions (Ed Harris played him in the movie) is a devout Roman Catholic and based the mission statement for the Apollo missions on Catholic teaching? His autobiography, “Failure is Not an Option” is well worth reading.

Catholic Space Shuttle Astronaut received the Eucharist in orbit in 2004: “Kevin shared the body of Christ with Sid and me, and we floated weightless on the flight deck, grateful for this moment of comradeship and communion with Christ,” wrote Jones. “Our silent reflection was interrupted by a sudden burst of dazzling white light. The sun had risen just as we finished Communion, and now its pure radiance streamed through Endeavour’s cockpit windows and bathed us in its warmth … I rolled away from my crewmates, unable to stem the tears evoked by that singular sunrise.”
