On the day that Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio was elected the 266th pope in the history of the Catholic church, the Wimberg family rushed to their Northfield home to watch the white smoke emanate from the Sistine Chapel’s chimney.
So profound was the event that Wimberg’s oldest son, Chip, 15, changed his confirmation name from Christopher to Francis, in honor of the newly elected pope.
And when Pope Francis asked everyone to pray for him, the Wimbergs stopped, held hands and said the “Our Father,” said Christy Wimberg, mother of four.
In his short tenure, Francis has had such a strong impact on millions of Catholics worldwide that media have coined the term “The Francis Effect” to describe his likability and influence. The Pew Research Center found that Francis is as popular as Pope John Paul II was, and that 70 percent of U.S Catholics feel he is the face of long-awaited change in the Catholic Church. More than half of non-Catholics feel similarly, the Pew study found.
