Tell me if the following sins either venial or mortal:
  1. Telling a lie. (such as telling your boss you have a doctor appointment just to get off early)
  2. Looking at pornography via the internet.
  3. Not attending Mass on Sunday if you have no way to get there.
  4. Not going to confession once a year.
Thanks!

  1. Telling a lie is usually a venial sin, unless there is an additional factor (such as malice in your intention, or grave harm in the consequences) that would make the sin mortal.
  2. Looking at pornography via the internet.
Could be venial or mortal. If you are committing any sexual acts, other than natural marital relations, it is always a mortal sin. The interior sin of lust is also a mortal sin.
  3. Not attending Mass on Sunday if you have no way to get there.
If you really have no way to get to Mass, then missing Mass is not a sin.
  4. Not going to confession once a year.
If you have no actual mortal sins on your conscience, then many theologians say that you are not required to go to confession even once a year. My opinion is that, if you are able to get to confession, and you neglect to go even once a year:
    if you have only venial sin on your conscience, then it is a venial sin not to go;
if you have actual mortal sin on your conscience, then it is a mortal sin not to go.

Number 3 is not a sin. Participating each week and Holy Day at mass is an obligation that has limitations to your ability to fulfill. If you are ill, you are not obliged. If you are confined, you are not obliged. If you can only get there on foot and it is many miles, you are not obliged.

Number 1 is a sin, but it can vary how serious it is. In my situation, it would be grave. By grave I mean it has the potential to be a mortal sin for me, to have the potential to indicate serious harm in my relationship with God. For a sin to be mortal, it first needs to be grave matter, and then it must furthermore meet other conditions still. Number 2 and number 4 also have the potential to be mortal sins.

With number 4, though, especially, it would be important to look at what is going on with the person. Do they have a relationship with God? What’s going on in their life? Do they live in a remote area with no regular priest (like your number 3)? Maybe they have not done a mortal sin in the last while, and that is why they are not going. Or, maybe they are refusing the sacrament because they think the Church is wrong about confession. Before number 4 can even begin to be a mortal sin, they have to be under a jurisdiction that requires confession (your average Catholic is). A catechumen, for example, is not required to go to confession. They aren’t baptized yet.

it depends on the gravity of the lie this is probably a venial sin
lying about the books or a safety issue or something serious could be mortal sin
  1. Looking at pornography via the internet.
if you mean just a glance because a website came up you didn’t know was porno, or an ad with a girl in a bikini which pop up everywhere, no sin because no intent. if you mean a habit of obtaining sexual gratification this way again depends on gravity, frequency, and if it is a site that includes graphic violence, definitely mortal and makes you an accessory to any crime involved, also could possibly be mental disorder that requires treatment if it replaces or interferes with normal sexual development and expression.
  1. Not attending Mass on Sunday if you have no way to get there.
there is no obligation if you can’t get there because of transportation, too far to walk, illness, caring for someone else etc, so no sin at all
  1. Not going to confession once a year.
the obligation is to confess mortal sins once a year. failure to do so just adds another one to the pile and if you receive communion in this state, adds the mortal sin of sacrilege
Thanks!

  1. Ordinarily a venial sin…
  2. Grave matter for mortal sin.
From the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

2354 Pornography consists in removing real or simulated sexual acts from the intimacy of the partners, in order to display them deliberately to third parties. It offends against chastity because it perverts the conjugal act, the intimate giving of spouses to each other. It does grave injury to the dignity of its participants (actors, vendors, the public), since each one becomes an object of base pleasure and illicit profit for others. It immerses all who are involved in the illusion of a fantasy world. It is a grave offense. Civil authorities should prevent the production and distribution of pornographic materials.
  1. No sin if really no way…(for the Church does not require the impossible)
4.Depends on if one has mortal sin…then one is obliged to go each year for sure!..(but should go sooner of course!)

From the Compendium of the Catechism:
  1. When does one commit a mortal sin?
1855-1861
1874

One commits a mortal sin when there are simultaneously present: grave matter, full knowledge, and deliberate consent. This sin destroys charity in us, deprives us of sanctifying grace, and, if unrepented, leads us to the eternal death of hell. It can be forgiven in the ordinary way by means of the sacraments of Baptism and of Penance or Reconciliation.
  1. When does one commit a venial sin?
1862-1864
1875

One commits a venial sin, which is essentially different from a mortal sin, when the matter involved is less serious or, even if it is grave, when full knowledge or complete consent are absent. Venial sin does not break the covenant with God but it weakens charity and manifests a disordered affection for created goods. It impedes the progress of a soul in the exercise of the virtues and in the practice of moral good. It merits temporal punishment which purifies.

Venial sin. See: “Thou shalt not be stupid.”

Tell your boss you have personal business to attend to. This is the polite way of telling the boss it’s none of his business.
  1. Looking at pornography via the internet.
sin: either/or. Internet or otherwise. Go the Steve Wood’s website dads.org/ and see why. Steve’s website includes all the stuff Focus on the Family conveniently omits.
  1. Not attending Mass on Sunday if you have no way to get there.
Neither
  1. Not going to confession once a year.
Go monthly and the once-a-year-confession problem doesn’t exist.
