Re: The growth of LDS ~ I have personal friends who have left the LDS church years ago, some of whom are now Catholic, who are still counted among the LDS membership. The numbers are clearly inflated even if such inflation is inadvertent.

Re: Catholics converting to Mormonism ~ sounds like inadequately catechized Catholics seeking a social group to me, but that’s just my opinion. For what it’s worth, my RCIA class (I’m an Episcopal convert to RC) had a Mormon in it. So it goes both ways.
Come to my ward sometime, and I will be glad to introduce you to the 40% or so of us who are ex-catholics. We had about 7 more visiting this sunday, learning the gospel.

Perhaps they learned something, but I question what that was. Mormons mostly don’t have a “gospel” so it’s hard to know what you’re referring to. Since Mormons consider their “book of mormon” to be “gospel” it is questionable as to whether your visitors learned any “gospel”. The book of mormon is clearly an invention of Joseph Smith.

I submit all those so called “ex-Catholics” you speak of are among those that were never properly catechized to begin with. Is that your fault? Of course not. But that also doesn’t make your faith “true”. If you’re thinking that the conversion of Catholics is some “feather” in your “cap”, it’s NOT. Is that why you come here? To brag? Is that worthy?

An active social circle ~ a critical element of the so-called Mormon “faith” ~ has never proved the validity of any faith. When we ALL return to the one true church (and no matter what anyone says, there can be ONLY ONE) the one founded by Jesus Christ, (that is, the faith NOT founded by Joseph Smith or any other man) I strongly suspect Jesus will be more satisfied than what we see as the current proliferation of sects.

In case there was any question, the faith founded by Jesus Christ, the one still practiced today in the manner in which He directed, is the faith known today as the Roman Catholic Church. Come home! We stand ready to receive you. Our RCIA classes are full of those who have rejected the Mormon faith and have realized that the faith founded by Jesus Christ Himself is that which they feel most identified with.

God Bless

That’s untrue. Instead of spreading incorrect information you might consider asking someone.
Huh, a moment ago didn’t you just say that The Church of Jesus Christ " mostly don’t have a “gospel?”" Now you say they do.

Which is it going to be?
The book of mormon is clearly an invention of Joseph Smith.
Oh, I get it. You’re not a serious poster. You just want to insult other’s faith.

Oh, could you “submit” any evidence for you hopes? Would the words “Of course not” be appropriate here? Of course it would.

An interesting point. As it so happens the proof that the Church of Jesus Christ is true is the exact same quantity of proof that the Roman Catholic Church is true.

Funny - huh.

It’s nice to have an opinion.

Re-read it. Perhaps you will understand it next time. 🙂

Oh, I get it. You’re not a serious poster. You just want to insult other’s faith.

I have no interest in insults, but I suppose some people do have such interests. Do YOU? My interest is in the TRUTH. There is nothing about the Joseph Smith story that smacks of truth.

Oh, could you “submit” any evidence for you hopes? Would the words “Of course not” be appropriate here? Of course it would.

This is silly. The initial poster gave out unsubstantiated percentages. So what is you want here, for someone to back up the bogus Mormon numbers? Why?

An interesting point. As it so happens the proof that the Church of Jesus Christ is true is the exact same quantity of proof that the Roman Catholic Church is true.

I’m sure some people would like to think so. The fact that reality is not on the side of Mormonism is an impediment. But why bother with reality when fantasy and conjecture is so much more interesting? 🤷

It’s nice to have an opinion.

I guess so. 🙂 Opinions are ubiquitous, facts and reality are, well, facts and reality.

Snow;4448178:
I haven’t said anything untrue. If you have other information, provide it and support it. But make sure it’s factual.
You have and I suspect you know it. The Church of Jesus Christ believes in and accepts the gospel as found in New Testament.

It is so commonly known that the Bible is part of our canon - and hence official doctrine that I can’t believe you are seriously asking for proof. No literate adult with average intelligence would be so uniformed. Hence I rather suspect that the problem is one of honesty, not education.
don’t need to ask anyone about a so-called “gospel” that was made up by a charlatan named Joseph Smith nearly 200 years ago.
Oh - more insults. Apparently your just a lightweight name-caller.

How childish.
The Mormons DON’T have a “gospel” and that’s just a fact.
I bet you COULDN’T find a Mormon so dishonest that they would claim that Catholics don’t have a gospel. Deceit is such an unsavory trait.
I have no interest in insults, but I suppose some people do have such interests. Do YOU? My interest is in the TRUTH. There is nothing about the Joseph Smith story that smacks of truth.
Can’t even be honest with yourself. Sad, so very sad.

Why are you so insecure in your own faith that you have to insult mine?
This is silly. The initial poster gave out unsubstantiated percentages. So what is you want here, for someone to back up the bogus Mormon numbers? Why?
You just asserted that he made up bogus numbers. Care to prove it?

At least the other poster comes across as honest.

By the way, I went on a mission and baptized some 200 Catholics. Will you claim that that is bogus and if so can you prove it?
'm sure some people would like to think so. The fact that reality is not on the side of Mormonism is an impediment. But why bother with reality when fantasy and conjecture is so much more interesting?
Here’s your chance to not be a name-calling lightweight: Prove that God likes the Roman Catholic Church more than The Church of Jesus Christ.

And you have the temerity to suggest others are childish. 🤷

What is sad is that when Mormons are presented with facts, they call it an attack.

One more for the “ignore” list.

These are all very interesting observations. 🙂

But what exactly makes Mormons think that they can maintain this “restored” state? If Catholicism can “go down the toilet” (for a lack of better terms), what makes them so confident that they can prosper as the “new Catholic Church”? It seems to me that they are trying way too hard.

Ironically Yours.
Logically - nothing would preclude it from happening again. As a matter of faith we believe that it won’t go down the drain - that is, it, The Church, was set up a final time in preparation for the 2nd Coming.

RebeccaJ;4452895:
I have no idea what that mean. Where you making a veiled insult by any chance.

And why should I provide proof to you? What purpose would it serve? Besides which, who are you to ask - when I ask you to provide some evidence, for example of consubstantiality, you never do.
You’re changing the subject.

Baseball baptisms refers to a practice that existed years ago in Central and South America on some missions. People were baptized but for the wrong reasons. The baptisms (enmass) occured in order to inflate the numbers. It has since been done away with years ago.

Mormons are encouraged to study the gospel every day as contained in the bible and in other scriptures. I would have to say that when compared to catholics, the lds study the scriptures more. This is not to mean that catholics are not religious but they are not encouraged to study the scriptures daily. But they are encouraged to say the rosary daily.

The book of mormon is clearly an invention of Joseph Smith.

Yes, it clearly is. But perhaps it is not so clear. For afterall many have tried to claim such a statement but have failed to prove such a statement.

once again you misrepresent catholic teaching and take a shot at catholics as somehow being “lazy” in their faith. Catholics are encouraged to go to daily mass where the scriptures are read, catholics are encouraged to read scriptures and pray daily. (not just the rosary)

how many mormons are going to sacrament meeting daily?

By any objective analysis the so-called “Book of Mormon” is clearly the work of Joseph Smith, although to say it was an “original” work may be an overstatement. It is clearly not a translation of more ancient texts as has been alleged. The objective reasons/evidence for this conclusion have long been on record in some cases and continue to pile up in other cases.

Anyone familiar with the more scholarly analyses of the Book of Mormon does not need me to point them in the direction of such things and anyone determined to believe the Book of Mormon despite the mountain of evidence to the contrary will not be swayed by it. Suffice it to say it is not a credible text by any objective measurement.

That is not to say that Mormons are not nice people and it is not to call them any sort of names or criticize anyone in any way. That has never been the point, notwithstanding some members attempts to re-characterize or re-direct the thread. Speaking merely of the text so often referred to by Mormons as “scripture” ~ the objective evidence to disprove the validity of the Book of Mormon is substantive.

What I want to know is, where’s the gold!!! The book of mormon was allegedly printed up from golden plates. I have a copy here and it’s a pretty large book. That would mean a large number of plates and a lot of gold. Since gold has been a precious metal and highly coveted by all of mankind from the beginning, I have a hard time believing these plates were just, er,lost. Lost??? A couple of tons of gold?? Lost???

Yes, and don’t forget that Joseph Smith claimed that he RAN while carrying this “couple of tons” of gold…

There are two highly problematic issues with Mormonism.

The first is the credibility of its doctrines. A few examples:
God is an animate creature
The Catholic Church succumbed to an Apostacy prior to the Apostles even dying and then was resurrected in by Joseph Smith 1800 years later. Of course, when pressed, they can’t define exactly what this apostacy in th eCatholic Church was
The ability to change doctrines as new revelations come in, as is God was subject to changing his mind
The second major problem is the credibility of their founder, Joseph Smith. He started out life as a fortune hunter, using seer stones to detect treasure. Then he came up with the Mormon religion, saying that he got the book for Mormon from a set of Gold plates, which or course have vanished. Then he started up a commune for his religion, only to be tarred and feathered by his own followers in 1832, when they suspected Smith was trying to take their property. Nevertheless, some of his followers stayed with him. They were rewarded by a new revelation that Smith could have multiple wives. He took a reported 27 of them, some as young as 14 and at least 10 that were already wives of his folllowers. Smith told one prospective wife that her submission would insure the eternal salvation of her father’s household. Furthermore, once sealed for eternity by priesthood authority, Joseph revealed that such couples would continue to procreate in the next life, becoming “enlarged” and, in effect, gods. Unfortunately for Smith, he seduced the wife of his second in command, William Law, who quit the organization, bought a printing press and publish an expose. Smith retaliated by destroying the printing press, an offense that landed him in Jail, from which he was ultimately assassinated.

It is very hard to distinguish Joseph Smith from the typical cult leader, who uses his charm and story to exploit his followers for money, power and sex. It is particularly difficult for his followers, who profess to following the bible to reconcile Smith’s obvious adultery with the obvious admonitions against such a practice in both the old and new testaments. You would expect that if God was really going to start a new christian religion after an 1800 year hiatus, that he would have chosen someone to lead it who was of unquestioned moral character, not someone whose life was full of scandal and vice and for whom the 10 commandments would have to be altered…

Many go to the temple daily and even work long hours and then pay their tithing for the priviledge. Three hour meetings on sundays, doing your callings, and that is if you are not in the leadership.

And we wouldn’t have it any other way.
