You know, from what I’ve read on a fair few threads, I feel like I can come to the theory that there is at least one beauty of the Mormon faith.

Now, originally, it’s always been Protestants vs. Catholics. But then, the Mormon church came into the picture…

I’ve seen one or two threads that are about Mormons or their church/practices/people, and along with those threads, some people have replied with reference to Protestants being our “brethren”–it’s definitely something I can get used to: Being alongside the Protestants after centuries of conflict.

So, although Protestants and Catholics are mortal rivals, when the Mormons get into the picture, it’s Protestants & Catholics vs. Mormons. It’s like politics: Dems vs. Reps to Dems & Reps vs. the Third Party.

Anyways, my question is: Why is this? Is it because of differences in faith? Or History? Or is it just the threat of a dangerous competition?

Well, I think it’s just because Protestant at least claim to come FROM the Catholic church… They claim that their faith is just a branched off version of Catholicism…

Mormons on the other hand, like to claim that they are the restored version of the Catholic church after it “went wrong.” So you can’t really “lump them together” with most protestant believers in that regard.

Does that make sense?

Catholics and Protestants agree on the essentials - the Nicene Creed. the Mormons deny most elements of the Nicene Creed including the nature and power of God, and therefore are in opposition to both Catholics and Protestants.

It is also canonized Mormon doctrine that both Catholics and Protestants are “the great and abominable church” and that our creeds are “abominations” and that all of us who profess those creeds are “corrupt”.

The Mormons have brought it on themselves.

I would add a forth category, the Jehovah’s Witnesses or Inglesai Ng Cristo and the others who don’t believe in the Trinity yet demand to be called Christians.

They also deny the divinity of Christ.

These are all very interesting observations. 🙂

But what exactly makes Mormons think that they can maintain this “restored” state? If Catholicism can “go down the toilet” (for a lack of better terms), what makes them so confident that they can prosper as the “new Catholic Church”? It seems to me that they are trying way too hard.

The great and abominable church is a metaphor for the error that exists in every system, including Mormonism. It’s the tares mixed with the wheat.
While I find much to disagree with Tsuzuki on, I generally agree with him here.

Sounds reasonable, most definitely.

Every faith has its moments, but, of course, nothing’s perfect.

One of the things that Mormons believe enables them to maintain their “restored” state is that they claim to have a living Prophet who guides the church and therefore would serve as a means to prevent the church from falling into error.

Of course, the Catholic Church has a similar claim, and this was a promise from Jesus Himself, that the Catholic Church, whose first Pope was Saint Peter, would stand for all time, protected by Jesus Himself from even the worst attempts against it. Even though the Catholic Church has been headed, at times, by very weak Popes, the Church remains true to the faith & teachings of Jesus and survives intact just as Jesus promised it would.

Personally, I’m taking the word of Jesus over Joseph Smith. 😉

Because the bible says the “gates of hell will not prevail against us”. And it hasn’t!

Your question above “Why is this?”

Your answer was above that "But then, the Mormon church came into the picture… "

To me, the whole thing with Mr. Smith just does not pass the smell test.

[concerning your “Ironically Yours”]: Cheap shot. 😉

If that quote truly comes from the Bible, it must apply to *all *Christian denominations, including the Mormon Church in a way… So, assuming that Catholicism is “in the toilet”, the LDS Church is next.

Well, that’s obviously just a theory. Not very surprising, though. LatterDay Saints even beat the religion of the Spaghetti Monster in the Most Laughed at Religions. 😛 (Sorry, I just found that funny when I heard about it, last year.)

I’ve always thought, when someone or a group of people go around the world at least once, spreading a certain something (whether it’d be music, faith, etc.), it gets stronger for a moment, but then, eventually, falls apart. It unfortunately happened to the Catholic Church (to an extent), so it’ll happen to the Mormon Church.

But where does that leave Protestants, I wonder.

I’m curious. Do you think they [Mormons] were just an intrusion? Because, as much as I hate to admit it, I certainly believe so. 😦

Protestants being so diverse its like not suffering from single stock risk when investing. But I guess you still suffer from the entire sector or perhaps the entire market crashing.

If a single denomination fails the Kingdom still survives as others step up to fill the gap.

The Catholic Church as 1.2 billion members and it is growing.

How is this falling apart?

Converts to Catholicism are a major factor in this growth, and I’m proud to be one of them.

Intrusion, Delusion however you want to look at it. I think Mormons were lead by a false prophet into believing one thing that has always been easy for people to misunderstand.
