In a recent edition in the “West Tennessee Catholic” newspaper, it had an article covering a Muslim & Christian Forum at St. Augustine Church.

There were 3 Christians and 3 Muslims. The three Christians were the pastor at St. Augustine’s, a Presbyterian Liberation Church Pastor, and a pastor at a “Church of Human Development”.

So in this article, there is the following sentence:
It is clear that each of the faiths represented believe that Jesus is Messiah, and that Muhammad is a prophet.
So I’m a little confused…

Muslims - Does the Islamic faith regard Jesus as the Messiah?

Christians - Does the Christian faith regard Muhammad as a prophet?

I’ve never been taught that I should regard Muhammad as a prophet, and I’ve been a Catholic for a year. What else do I need to know?

Of course, I realize the mix of panelists on both sides could have contributed to a bad dissemination of information.

Well I wish we could see the article, so that we could see that sentence in context. It’s not clear who even said that in the part you quoted.

And yes you’re right. If you’re Catholic (or any Christian for that matter), you cannot believe Mohammed was a prophet.

Well, I’ve been a Catholic for 42 years and this is the first time I’m hearing that Christianity regards Muhammad as a prophet.
We acknowledge that Muslims believe he was a prophet, but that’s it.
If I’m incorrect, I hope that someone would provide me with a link showing official Church documentation that She teaches Muhammad is a prophet.
I wouldn’t accept the word of anyone else, at face value, on this one. Even the pastor of a Catholic Church.

God Bless,

Denise

Christianity does not consider any person after Christ to be a prophet, as there is no further revelation. Jesus, as the second person of the Trinity, revealed the full deposit of faith to the apostles. Christianity is a revealed religion…nothing to be added.

My understanding of Islam, is that they consider Jesus a prophet, but is not the Messiah or God. I’m sure I’ll get set straight if I’m wrong.

Moslems do not regard Jesus as the Messiah, that is: ‘the One sent’! They see Him as a prophet, some as a great prophet but they do not see Him as the Son of God.

We out of Christian tollerance, accept that Moslems see Mohammid as a Prophet but we do not see him as one.

I’m sorry thats incorrect. Isa (the name given to Jesus in Islam) is named al-Masih (Arabic for the Messiah) eleven times in the Qu’ran:

However I do not recognise Muhammad as a true prophet any more than i recognise Guru Nanak or Siddartha Gautama

** [1] Muslims - Does the Islamic faith regard Jesus as the Messiah?**

** [2] Christians - Does the Christian faith regard Muhammad as a prophet?**
  1. Yes, if you mean the one promised to the Jews…
  2. No, not if you believe Jesus is the divine Son of God…😃
Prayers and petitions,

At most, we regard Muhammed as a false prophet.

*Islam: right channel, **very *bad reception

However their Koran calls him Christ
from…
[Middle English Crist, from Old English Crīst, from Latin Chrīstus, from Greek Khrīstos, from khrīstos, anointed, verbal adj. of khrīein, to anoint; see ghrēi- in Indo-European roots.]

I agree, it is always good to have the context.

Our Diocescian paper is online and here is the link to that article. The sentence in question is in the 6th little paragraph which begins… “The task of the forum…”

It’s possible that it was just a bad wording of the sentence. Perhaps it should have been worded as follows:
  • It is clear that Christianity and Islam each regard Jesus as the Messiah and Mohammad as a prophet, respectively. *
Meaning, Christianity regards Jesus as the Messiah and Islam regards Mohammad as a prophet.

Maybe the writer meant to say that, but it came out all wrong. Or maybe the writer is all mixed up.

Well no need to get all into semantics. My question is basically answered. Just wanted to be sure I wasn’t the only Catholic that fails to hail Mohammad as being a great prophet.

Thanks for all your responses!

You could argue that he was a prophet insofar as he taught the truth of the One God to people who had been polytheistic. But it is highly misleading to say without qualification that he was a prophet. We do not believe that his teachings in their entirety were inspired or endorsed by God. He was a human being who taught some true and some false things.

Anything true he taught was from Judaism and Christianity. The lies were his own!
He wasn’t just a false prophet he was to date probably the worst anti-Christ.

Here is a Muslim publication on Jesus: islam-guide.com/ch3-10.htm They believe he was the Messiah but not in the same way we do.
Unfortunately they use the term “Messiah”

The Family of Imran
[3.45] When the angels said: O Marium, surely Allah gives you good news with a Word from Him (of one) whose name is the '. Messiah, Isa son of Marium, worthy of regard in this world and the hereafter and of those who are made near (to Allah).

The Women
[4.157] And their saying: Surely we have killed the Messiah, Isa son of Marium, the apostle of Allah; and they did not kill him nor did they crucify him, but it appeared to them so (like Isa) and most surely those who differ therein are only in a doubt about it; they have no knowledge respecting it, but only follow a conjecture, and they killed him not for sure.
[4.171] O followers of the Book! do not exceed the limits in your religion, and do not speak (lies) against Allah, but (speak) the truth; the Messiah, Isa son of Marium is only an apostle of Allah and His Word which He communicated to Marium and a spirit from Him; believe therefore in Allah and His apostles, and say not, Three. Desist, it is better for you; Allah is only one God; far be It from His glory that He should have a son, whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth is His, and Allah is sufficient for a Protector.
[4.172] The Messiah does by no means disdain that he should be a servant of Allah, nor do the angels who are near to Him, and whoever disdains His service and is proud, He will gather them all together to Himself.

The Dinner Table
[5.17] Certainly they disbelieve who say: Surely, Allah-- He is the Messiah, son of Marium. Say: Who then could control anything as against Allah when He wished to destroy the Messiah son of Marium and his mother and all those on the earth? And Allah’s is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and what is between them; He creates what He pleases; and Allah has power over all things,
[5.72] Certainly they disbelieve who say: Surely Allah, He is the Messiah, son of Marium; and the Messiah said: O Children of Israel! serve Allah, my Lord and your Lord. Surely whoever associates (others) with Allah, then Allah has forbidden to him the garden, and his abode is the fire; and there shall be no helpers for the unjust.
[5.75] The Messiah, son of Marium is but an apostle; apostles before him have indeed passed away; and his mother was a truthful woman; they both used to eat food. See how We make the communications clear to them, then behold, how they are turned away.

The Immunity
[9.30] And the Jews say: Uzair is the son of Allah; and the Christians say: The Messiah is the son of Allah; these are the words of their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved before; may Allah destroy them; how they are turned away!
[9.31] They have taken their doctors of law and their monks for lords besides Allah, and (also) the Messiah son of Marium and they were enjoined that they should serve one God only, there is no god but He; far from His glory be what they set up (with Him).

This is because Muhammed developed Islam as he went along.

And that site you cite is full of errors used to make Islam seem more friendly; they completely misinform over Islam’s idea on terrorism.

Yes Muhammad is a prophet, but a false one, a heretic one to be precise. You can call him the Basilides of Arabia.

Yes Jesus is the Messiah, but only to Jews according to Muslims, but i don’t think according to the Quran that says “he’s a sign to mankind” unless mankind means Jews.
