tGette, your thread made me wonder…and i thought of Christian charity. Which reminds me, i better start being nicer towards our Muslim posters. All to often, i have made some sarcastic remarks (which is what i “specialise” in ) and sometimes after posting them, i feel like kicking myself in the behind for being such a hypocrite.

Sigh, please pray that i become a better person and thank you tGette, for this thread. Great reminder of what we as Christians must strive to be - like Jesus and His ever so graceful Mother.

Perhaps you should change the title of the thread to “Shame on US” ?

That said, I agree. It’s one thing to vigorously debate (after all, we have nothing to fear!), but to use Chick-esque tactics and misrepresent our opponents’ beliefs is beneath us.

Or maybe change the title to Whoever is uncharitable shame on you! God bless

I agree that its easy to lose sight of our principle calling - to act in love and with patience - though we are also instructed in scripture to correct. So we can and should stand for the truth but must all strive to avoid the trapping of pride, arrogance and impatience. A Christian attitude and example will do more to lead people to the truth than strong intellectual debate conducted without Love. Paul said that without love, He is nothing.

A Prayer for Charity

Lord, I know that all the signs of faith and belief are worthless and empty without charity.

Please keep me from being jealous, boastful, arrogant, rude, irritable, or resentful. Keep me from wanting my own way in everything, and from enjoying someone else being wrong.

Grant me patience and kindness. Let me rejoice in the right. Help me bear whatever comes, including insults to myself and my faith. Grant me humility.

Remind me that I am still growing, and that I do not know it all, that only You do.

Keep me strong in faith and hope, and above all, in love.

Amen.

I bring this up because (and I am guilty myself) too often we become religious bigots and/or insensitive. We need to respect more other’s perspectives and pray MORE for them. Pray as we reply, as we read, etc. (You know…unceasingly!)

I am much less of a bigot without the anonimity of the internet.

Perception of self to others is hard to predict or know and sometimes preconceived notions account for how things are received despite the written demeanor or facts presented. Silence may be the best act of charity in some cases but then dialog would rarely gets past pleasantries depending on the subject.

If a person does not want to be called a thief they should not steal, by that I mean some tenets of other faiths make me out to be either a liar or deluded by being Catholic just by nature of their stated belief. I do not go to other sites such as a Moslem or non-Catholic Christian one to ‘correct’ them as they seem to want to do by coming here so I am sometimes at a loss for the wounded feelings they claim.

Respecting the persons individual right to have a different belief has never been an issue as long as they keep to themselves but when they enter the public discourse in an effort to ‘correct’ me or influence my vote by using my/our faith (I feel) inappropriately then they should not be too surprised by a rigorous defense.

Granted, there is little reason to call someone stupid/ignorant but when seeming intelligent people accept as true:
Moslem scripture that says Christ did not die on the cross or Rise; Mary is part of Trinity and different words and/of Prophets delivered by an unsavory individual,
LDS scripture from dubious gold plates and factually disproven history…delivered by an unsavory individual,
Protestant seeming blind hatred of the Church led by unsavory individuals,
Catholics dismissing Scripture and using weasel words to promote unjust war for false nobility and excessive pride…

Sometimes nice doesn’t cut it but I will take the OP to heart and continue to work on my humility.

All peoples, including faithful orthodox Catholics are in need of true conversion…it should be our lifes goal to be transformed completely into Christ’s image.

It is to be expected that there are bad eggs with in any religion and even Christianity. Too often I see Christians slamming one another.

Here, I am singling out Catholics (because I am one):

We need to be more charitable in evangelizing. We need to remember that Christ said people would know we are His disciples by our love. This is not to say that we should not stand firm in the truth which we hold to be…well…true. But we need to stop relying so much on ourselves to intellectually convince someone of Catholic truth and to rely on God as the one who, ultimately, will convert their heart.

I bring this up because (and I am guilty myself) too often we become religious bigots and/or insensitive. We need to respect more other’s perspectives and pray MORE for them. Pray as we reply, as we read, etc. (You know…unceasingly!)

In my head I had a better way of articulating all this, but as a case in point (unfortunately) this negative attitude will continue by some and we need to begin with ourselves (through prayer) to not be this way and to let the Love of Christ work through us when evangelizing and teaching the truth of the Catholic Church.

Sure! We can all be charitable to every one who is a non-catholic…:tiphat:
while allowing their pastors to spread falsehood and attack our faith. :banghead:
It is a fact that some non-catholic posters here are pastors or ministers and are not intent on seeking truths but spreading lies and are trying to confuse and deceive our little ones and their innocent ones.
Maybe we can pray that “all our bishops be one” in mind to guide us better because I really, really doubt that every single person on this planet will be in “union with us” at any point in time- present or future. As there are sheeps, there always be goats. True teachers, false teachers. We can’t ‘all’ be one. So trying to be charitable will win them all? I don’t think so.
This site is about answers- Catholic answers. About truths! Not only about charity or peace. “He comes with a sword, not peace…” remember? There are always contradictions.
We must proclaim what are revealed Christian truths as always maintained by the Catholic Church. Either they’ll accept them or reject them. They’re free to choose.

A beautiful post tabarakAllah (may Allah be praised). Respect and dialogue can go together. Bashing and hatefulness makes things worse.

Muslims I have seen and I am really being sincere and honest here are not coming in here and trying to change you to Islam. They are having to put up with such horrible accusations put out to them by horribleness of the tongue posed to them. *** I saw it straight away.*** In return, they can come up with some really hard answers to the Christians and then that leads off to a war on words. In Islam, if you do not have anything nice to say, one should keep quiet. (sahih hadith).

Charity is beautiful in Islam.

The Prophet Mohammad (sws) said, “On every Muslim there is enjoined (a compulsory) Sadaqa (alms).” They (the people) said, "If one has nothing?’ He said, “He should work with his hands so that he may benefit himself and give in charity.” They said, “If he cannot work or does not work?” He said, “Then he should help the oppressed unhappy person (by word or action or both).” They said, “If he does not do it?” He said, "Then he should enjoin what is good (or said what is reasonable).’ They said, "If he does not do that’’’ He said, "Then he should refrain from doing evil, for that will be considered for Him as a Sadaqa (charity) . " (narrated in Sahih Al Bukhari)

So, words of the tongue have a percentage and one can either gain or receive rewards.

I was raised a Protestant. I only studied a little of Catholicism when I was lookin through religions. But if I were to have come in here looking for a logical dialogue, I would have turned straight around and headed for another place. I wasn’t raised to bash people because of what I only believed. This isn’t what Jesus intended when he said be kind to your neighbors.
