Odd.

Our Lord has said that we are to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless and so forth. He said nothing about longevity on the land and/or paperwork documentaion.

He said to attend to the needs of those in need.
Wouldn’t you agree???
But the immigrant that come here are after more than that. Brand new cars, cable TV, cell phones, expensive clothes, etc are not what the Lord had in mind.

If the people who came here were only interested in starting a life and not in dominating the culture, it probably wouldn’t be half as bad in my neighborhood as it is.

I have no idea what the immigrants in your neighborhood are “after” and unless you’ve formed friendships with some of them, I doubt that you have any idea either.

My own immigrant neighbors (and I have MANY) are interested in seeing their children educated and in earning a living. Many of them feel free to return to the Faith as well. (Practicing the Faith in Mexico is no easy thing.)

Born and raised in Chicago, I know that many parishes and neighborhoods were of the solo-ethnic variety. EVERYONE spoke Polish or Lithuanian, for example, and EVERYONE shopped in their “own language” shops and worshipped at “their own” language Catholic parishes. Within three generations, the children and grandchildren had assimilated and once all or most of the old-timers had died, the neighborhoods welcomed a new majority.

This is nothing new. It’s the norm.

This thread has taken a turn from heated, but potentially interesting, to flat out racist. I would like to discuss the proper relationship between the Church’s social ministry and the civil authorities, and/or the Church’s stance on immigration, but I won’t play the straight man in a racist rant. If anyone wants to actually discuss immigration, I suggest they start a new thread so we can try again.

I can accept that your view is the thread has become racist in tone. I disagree with that view. As Catholics, we’re called to exercise a preferential option for the poor. Almost without exception, it’s very likely that illegal immigrants are among the very poor. Therefore … serve we must.

The key word is “assimilate” which is what they are not doing. If they were, I wouldn’t have to look at Spanish TV, listen to Spanish radio, and children wouldn’t be forced to look at Spanish indoctrination programs on PBS.

There are schools that will no longer have a choice of foreign language classes. It’s Spanish or nothing. That is not diversity. That is a culture being forced on innocent American children.

That is not America.

That is Latin America annexing your neighborhood.

I say whoever has put the most into the land, deserves the land. That might even be biblical.

The family that has payed taxes for 50, 60, 70 years has more rights to the services than someone who just got there. Wouldn’t you agree?
I think the bible refers to the jubilee year which would seem to clash directly. Yet as American Indians would have “put the most into the land” then it would seem the ownership needs returned? Second to American Indians would certainly be the hired hand so your logic would remove most whom are there.

You don’t seem to “get it” and I have to guess that’s your choice. Maybe if, fifty or sixty years ago, ALL of the old ethnic (Polish, Italian, Greek, Lithuanian, etc.) parents, grandparents and great-grandparents were take to the local park and executed for their lack of English skills, then you’d have a precedent that would allow you to annihilate the Spanish-speaking. Would that satisfy you? Wait! That might mean you wouldn’t be here.

Never heard of American Indians paying taxes but I guess I don’t know everything.

The average American Indian tribe claimed to own hundreds of square miles and yet used so little of it. The typical American has less than a quarter of an acre of land so I guess the typical American uses his land more efficiently.

Would you say that if the American Indian tribes still controlled the entire North America continent, the world would be a better place or a backward place because of them?

When one uses the term “illegal immigration/immigrants” with “immigrants/immigration” it provides a false premise. I am from a culturally mixed family; Christmas looks like the general assembly from the UN. Each of us who came from another country came in legally. We had to have a sponsor or enough money to demonstrate our ability to be free of government assistance. We had to undergo health tests to be sure we were not carriers of TB or other bacterias. We may have spoken our own language at home, but made sure we learned to communicate in rudimentary terms to the outside world.

The system of rewarding illegal immigration is intrinsically and globally unfair. The poor of the world are everywhere, yet we only recognize as worthy those who can walk across a border, stow away in a cargo ship, or breech the ocean borders.

I am, quite frankly, outraged at those who receive preferential treatment by virtue of location. There are throngs of people languishing on waiting lists in Nigeria, Senegal, Korea, China, Eastern Europe, Chile, and Israel who would love to jump the line, without fulfilling any of the requirements for citizenship in this great land. But they don’t. So they wait, while billions are spent on housing criminals who come here illegally, or overstay their visas, to terrorize all with whom they come in contact. (yes of course, they’re not all criminals, duh, but those who are cost billions to service and monitor) The only way to have a minor fix on who’s who is to have a fair and encompassing system that rewards those who come legally and discourages/penalizes those who don’t.

I understand your view but this thread addresses the Church supporting/assisting illegal immigrants. This support is nothing new - and their is no history (known to me) of the Church today informing the govt of the location of illegals. Again illegals tend to be poverty-stricken and they are here due to that poverty.

Therefore, we serve them as we serve any who are poor.

Three totally different standards, which is correct?

In your very statement, you mentioned Polish Italian Greek Lithuanian, etc which is multi cultural. And 4 different languages. That is American!!!

But when the cultures of third world nations are forced on Americans, that is not assimilation. That is “Mein Kampf”! That is precisely how Hitler wanted it! His master race! Except this time, in Spanish!

It depends on what you mean by backward? If the American Indians still controlled the entire North American continent, global warming probably wouldn’t be an issue. LA wouldn’t be buried in smog and paved over, and the majority of Ohio wouldn’t be one huge hazardous waste dump. So yeah, I’d have to say that North America would be a better place if the Indian tribes had exercised the immigration policy you seem to embrace.

A better option maybe to allow those with id to travel, and pay relevent taxes? What is legal and illegal is human decision nor intrinsic. Neighbors are an immediate source of both prosperity and danger. You do not hear much about the Canadian border because they Canadians have equal education, jobs, and schools. We need to help Mexico get equal education, jobs, and schools, and then the problem is gone. I am glad your family was legally able to migrate, I hope none were ask to starve and hope for paperwork to clear.

All three. Any honest person would have to admit that the European taking control of North America has greatly benefitted the world. You can’t say otherwise without joking about it.

The “It all belongs to the Indians” routine is old and tired. You could use the same logic to Europe and redraw all the bounderies of the countries there but that was done by war anyway.

Would you really prefer to live in a teepee?

And where would you be right now?

I always wanted to ask a African American if they personally feel lucky that slavery happened. If it hadn’t, that person might now be in one of the worst countries to live in. But because it had, they now live in one of the best places to be.

I wonder what this country would look like with 300 million Indians living in teepees?

So that’s what happened to my cleaning lady!!
My cousin’s wife is with her family in Poland now. I’ll ask her about economic conditions there when she gets back next year. They celibrate the 12 days of Christmas with a party every night.

All three.
Those are your writtings and they still point to Indians ! Indians would certainly have " put the most into the land" and " efficient use" so why are you upset if your standards are used?

 Actually I do not agree with your statement

When your standard points to Indians you seem upset why?

There’s a bloggers’ law that says to the effect that where Hitler is invoked in a thread, that thread is about to close for lack of sound arguments.
