Catholics:Two questions on prejudice.

Hi all,

I am doing a bit of research here, and am hopeful you have some experiences you could share on this thread. This thread is a bit of an off shoot on my previous thread about Christian unity, and I am trying to ascertain the depth of divisions among faiths.

I have two questions.

1. Have you ever experienced prejudice from non-Catholic Christians and if so, could you give a brief synopsis of the experience?
2. Have you ever seen prejudice towards non-Catholic Christians by yourself or other Catholics and if so, could you give a brief synopsis of the experience?

Predjudice, no, inappropriate behaviour or disrespect, yes.

I can recall one time attending a full blown, Southern Baptist tent revival, (Yes, it really was held in a tent) and the person doing the preaching totally ripped into the Catholic Church. Whore of Bablyon, idol worshippers, the whole thing.

The only thing I can think of as far as a prejudice, would be not asking a friend of mine to be a groomsman at my wedding because he wasn’t Catholic.

I am sorry that has happened.

I was skimming your post very quickly. I didn’t see P in Pope and somehow I suppose with it being lower case, read it as “pop eye lover”. I know that is ludicrous… but in context, it was hilarious as well.

While my Baptist and Protestant brothers and sisters truly love Jesus, i have been ridiculed by them ie. calling the Holy Eucharist, the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (read John 6 and ) a “wafer”?

They ask why we have Jesus Crucified in our Churches?** " For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles" (1 Cor 1:22-23) **

They incorrectly say we “worship” Mary and the other Saints and they dispute the Priesthood and the Sacraments, just to name a few things.

That is ok, it is my job to witness the Love of Jesus Christ and to teach them with Sacred Scripture, the Truth of Jesus Christ, which is only completely contained in His Holy Catholic Church (we are all sinners, do not reject His Church because it contains many sinners!).

i’m glad you’re here asking questions. Their challenges to my Catholic Faith have made my ask questions, read Sacred Scripture and the Catechism of the Catholic Church (scborromeo.org/ccc.htm) to find the Truth which is Jesus Himself!

Prejudice? How would one know since it is normally practiced behind one’s back.
Ridicule is more like it.
I had Baptist friends when I was a kid. They thought that having a black woman in our church was hilarious. That memory is burned into my brain “Y’all go to church with *******?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?”.

I also remember having dinner at friend’s house in the 1st grade. They announced before dinner that it was time for the blessing. I did the sign of the cross, which they thought was hillarious.

I personnally never practiced prejudice toward non-Catholics until I became a good Catholic!

Seriously though,my wife has witnessed some superiority attitudes amongst some of the Catholics she knows. She said it was very disconcerting.

Prejudice, imo, is action not attitude. Many people don’t like Catholicism, but they don’t do anything about it.

And example of prejudice. I was friendly with a co-worker, even ocassionally talking about religion very briefly. He was always very friendly. When he found out I’m Catholic, he stopped talking to me. Now he says hello in passing only. What he has against me isn’t my color or sex, but my creed. I’m glad I wasn’t applying for a job. Lord knows I wouldn’t have been chosen.

1. yes, our neighborhood has a Christian Women’s Association. Catholics are not welcome unless they are willing to sign a sola scriptura statement of faith.
2. I am not sure if it is the kind of example you are looking for but my kids go to a Catholic school that also admits non-Catholics. Some of the Catholic parents kind of look down on the non-Catholic families. They are polite to them and include them but are somewhat cold, if you know what I mean. Now these families are a small minority of the ffamilies at our school and it is only recently that non-Catholic students were admitted so maybe it is just a matter of not being used to the change yet.

I’ve seen bad things from both. I’ve also seen bad things from those who are of non christian religions also. I’ve seen bad things from those who consider themselves athiests, and agnostics also.
I’ve concluded it’s a universal problem that christians would say are the result of the fall.
And, by the same token I have seen terrific examples of kindness and love from all of the above people.
I’ve concluded it’s a universal phenomena and that most people really desire to do the best.

The worst teasing I’ve suffered were at the hands of kids who were clearly parroting back things their parents taught them to say. And, they were christians. But most of the kids were christians, so that would be expected I guess.

Catholics get abuse from protestants but the same goes for anything else…

A co-worker who grew up Presbyterian (not currently practicing to my knowledge) made a comment one day at work. I think he forgot that I am Catholic. Referring to the prospect of V.P. Joe Biden being denied communion, he said, “There’s the Catholic Church again. . .trying to tell everyone what to do.” My reply was calm and inquisitive, as not to give myself away and hear a truly candid answer, “What do you mean?” He just said, “I don’t know. . .”, in a discouraged manner, as if his comment was an emotional one for which he had no explanation.
I suspect that he was subtly propagandized against the Catholic Church throughout his life. This may have been the first time he was asked to explain the reasoning for his conclusion.
