Catholic's view on homosexuality?

Okay, I hope I’m putting this in the right forum.
I know that I’ve heard this both ways. So I was wondering, what is the church’s specific stance on gay marriage and on being gay in general? (I am not gay, just wondering.) I know that as a Witness we do not condone that at all and would never approve of gay marriage. It can be found in the bible as a sin so we do not allow it.

Is this a sin according to Catholics as well?

Right from the Catechism:

2357. "Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity,[Cf. Gen 191-29 ; Rom 124-27 ; 1 Cor 6:10 ; 1 Tim 1:10 .] tradition has always declared that ‘homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.’[CDF, Persona humana 8.] They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved."

2358. "The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. They do not choose their homosexual condition; for most of them it is a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God’s will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord’s Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition. "

2359. "Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection. "

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

“Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that “homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.” They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.” (CCC 2357)

So what I’m reading (I just want to be clear) is that you can be gay, but you can’t act on it, right?

Because by acting on it it’s a sin, but if you are just gay and not act on it you have a mental condition or something? Is that it?

Why do you feel a need for such denials? I’m not accusing you of being gay just it’s always puzzled me why people do stuff like that. And, as a bisexual myself, I find it rather offensive.

um, because I’m not. It’s simply that.

And because I belong to a religion that considers it a sin, I would want to make that quite clear.

Are you Catholic? (I’m not, just wondering. ← that one was a joke. 😃 )

Why am I feeling like we have the same two hands starting these homosexual threads everyday???..It seems like the same two hands typing with a different puppet head ( poster name) for each new homosexual thread.

We already of have plenty of threads like this…

Why do you feel a need for such admittance? It’s always puzzled me why people do that. As a heterosexual myself, I find it rather offensive.
Now…see how annoying that is?

Well, I didn’t see any. And I just joined today. Everything gets covered up so quickly here because so many people post. My intro thread from an hour ago is already buried. So I didn’t want to search through and ressurect an old topic.

I’m not the same person as whoever else you’re talking about and I also don’t see why it’s a problem to ask questions like this. If you only want Catholics in here who know everything about the religion then there should be some sort of questionare to join.

I just wanted to know. If it bothers you, don’t answer.

I wouldn’t go around saying “I’m not black, but what is your moral view on Africanism?”. Why? Because it is partially offensive. I couldn’t say I’m justified in doing this because I’m Morman and the LDS church still views being black as some kind of a sin. There are unmistakable parallels between this and what is going on in society right now.

The SEARCH feature worked perfectly well the last time I checked.

Because it’s a positive label, not a negative one. It’s all in the denial factor. I didn’t say “I’m not straight”. That would be somewhat offensive.

Offensive? My truth is OK and yours is OK. We can be free to have our own truths. 😃

You didn’t pay attention to anything else I said. Like that I didn’t want to resurrect an old post.

And that if you don’t like a thread, don’t reply to it. And also that I am not catholic and wanted to know so if there are only catholics here, my apologies.

I don’t understand why I have to get jumped on for asking a legitimate question. Why do people have to be like this on forums? In real life would you be rude to someone for asking a question about your faith?

This whole business is off topic…stick to the topic please…

If you see “straight” as a positive label and you are bi why are you seeing it that way? Shouldn’t it be the opposite?

And people respond in ways that signify who they are. I am not gay. Woudl I normally point that out? no. But I was asking a question about homosexuality and so I pointed out that it was simply a curiousity thing, not because I am and wanted to know.

I have every right to point that out. Lets not turn this into some big flame war. It’s a simple question. Are you jumping on all the people who have “take back the rainbow” in their sigs too?

There aren’t Catholics only here…and I am not being rude…only stating that there are plenty of thread with this question already started and answered. You can find them easily with the SEARCH feature…and these are not ‘old’ threads.
