Simple Question: Catholics, where do Protestants go?

Do they go to Heaven or Hell? Is their no salvation outside the RCC?

Why, I ask is, I have been told many times, that a major reason the Catholic Church is better then any other is that they are completely united, ok, but then why have I been told by Catholics that protestants can make it to heaven, then been told, all non-catholics go to hell. How is that a united answer?

The Roman Catholic Church absolutely does not teach that all non-Catholics go to hell.

You ask any bunch of schoolkids what 2+2 adds up to, you’ll get one who says five or three.

It doesn’t mean there isn’t a unified, overall, answer, the correct one of four. It doesn’t mean that the teacher isn’t consistently teaching that one correct answer. Just means some of the pupils are getting that teaching wrong.

The way to judge a teacher is to first listen to what they are actually teaching, you can’t base your judgement entirely on the answers the pupils are coming up, which might or might not accuarately reflect that teaching.

Please forgive me in advance if I misunderstand your posting. It seems you have lumped Protestants with Mormons and Jehovah Witnesses. I don’t think this is the official Catholic position, correct? It is my understanding that Protestant baptisms are received in the Catholic Church, but Mormon and Jehovah Witness baptisms are rejected.

First we can’t make generalizations about anyone. Some Catholics go to Heaven, others are damned. While there is no salvation outside the Catholic Church entrusted to the Sucessor’s of Peter, that does not mean that all those not explicitly Catholic are definitively damned–some may be, some may not be. God offers the means of salvation to everyone, including uniting them to the Church, even if this is in a way known only to Himself.

We are to leave the ultimate judgment to God and simply exhort all men to partake of the means of salvation as members of the Body of Christ.

The kind of rejection talked about here by St. Thomas is heresy–which requires obstinate rebellion or negligence concerning revealed truth. Someone mistaken in good faith is not to be considered a heretic.

As St. Augustine explains:

“Those are by no means to be accounted heretics who do not defend their false and perverse opinions with pertinacious animosity, especially when their error is not the fruit of audacious presumption but has been communicated to them by seduced and lapsed parents, and when they are seeking the truth with cautious solicitude and ready to be corrected.”

Sorry to break it to you, but absolutely everyone in heaven is catholic.

But then, everybody in hell is catholic in their beliefs too. There’s no hiding from the truth past judgement day.

So what’s the answer to your question? I’m not qualified to answer. Only God does the judging. A few things I DO know:

1. God is the essense of justice, which includes fairness. He loves all people just as much as He loves me.
2. Not everybody appears to get the same opportunity here on earth to experience explicitly the love of God as exhibited in the life, passion and resurrection of Jesus. Somehow its His job to reconcile this fact with #1 above.
3. Jesus commanded us to spread the gospel to all nations and left us with the sacraments to be an everlasting source of Grace. So regardless of how good or bad the chances of non-catholics might seem to be based off speculation on 1 and 2 above, it’s our job as catholics to tell you how awesome Christ’s one, holy, catholic and apostolic church really is!

It is my understanding that Protestant baptisms are received in the Catholic Church

My wife’s was. That was a large issue for her. She was concerned that she would need to be re-baptized and to her that would have been like telling her that what she experienced previous was not real.

The answer to your question is that it is up to God. No one is saved by being a, “good Catholic” or a “good Protestant” or a good anything for that matter. We are saved by the Grace of God alone, Catholic, or Protestant, white or black, Grace!

Depends upon whether they are part of the one holy catholic and apostolic Church. Same applies to Roman Catholics.

IF they loved God above all else and their neighbors as themselves, they go to Heaven. IF they didn’t, then who knows where.

let’s all agree that who’s saved, and who’s not belongs to God’s authority alone. our’s is merely speculation. st. paul said to the philippians; “work out your salvation with fear and trembling.” let’s do our best and leave to God the rest.
