I hope this is the right forum.

Anyway, I am looking for articles contradicting the claim the Catholic church/Chritianity retarded sceience throughout history.

I did a search on science at the main page and found nothing.

But I beleive I read the founder of animal husbandry in the US SW was a priest. Or that botany had a major boost from a monk/priest. I recall other things but is there a good source for this?

And does anyone know the priest/monk’s name who founded much of the SW cattle I guess it is husbandry?

Don’t forget Gregor Mendel, the Augustinian priest who established the science of genetics. (and thereby removed one of the major scientific objections to Darwinism)

The notion that the Church retarded the development of science is mostly based on roughly 3 incidents.
  1. The burning of the Library at Alexandria. Of course the library was burned a number of times in its history, only once was part of it burned by Christians and it is not sure how many, if any books were actually destroyed by the Christians.
  2. The trial of Galileo.
  3. The trial of Giordano Bruno. It is true that Bruno was condemned for some of his scientific ideas, but more so for his unorthodox theology.
Now mind you, one of these events (the first) occurred during the last century of a Roman Empire that embraced all of Europe. By the time Europe had recovered from the Western Empire’s fall, the Library was no longer in the hands of the Eastern Empire and it seems it could have done little to help the West.

The trial of Galileo and Bruno were within 30 years of each other and seemed to have little impact on the advancement of science. Within 100 years of the death of Galileo, science was thriving throughout Europe.

In contrast, I think we need to look at the fact that many scientific advancements can in fact be attributed to the Church. The need to know when the Vernal Equinox occurred (so we could date Easter) help spur the development of Astronomy. In the 20th century, Georges Lemaitre, a Jesuit Priest, would propose what would become known as Big Bang Cosmology, Gregor Mendel, etc.
