Cause Opens for Nicholas Black Elk, Holy Man of the Lakota| National Catholic Register

This article is very interesting. I’ve always admired Black Elk but had NO idea he was a Catholic!

Is anyone else surprised by this?

Years ago I read and enjoyed “Black Elk Speaks” as recounted to and written by his biographer John Neihardt in the 1930s. Yet I don’t remember anything in that book about Black Elk being a devout Catholic. There have been subsequent books written about Black Elk by Jesuit Father Michael Steltenkamp which give a full account of his life.
