I have been struggling with this for some time, and I finally decided to post about it.

I have 2 situations that trouble me about my family. I live in Texas, they live in New Jersey. My mom is currently allowing her daughter and ***future ***son-in-law to live together with her. My parents, who are both Catholic, are divorced, and my dad married again outside the Catholic Church without an annulment when I was only about 7 years old.

When I travel home to New Jersey, I stay at mom’s or dad’s rather than book a hotel. I have not been back to New Jersey since the situation at my mom’s house began.

I am probably going up to visit this month. Am I commiting mortal sin by staying with either my mom or my dad? Must I confront my mom, sister, and dad about these situations?

Please help.

Actually, brother, I think that staying at a hotel would say it all. God bless.

I appreciate the replies, and I realize that staying at a hotel, and telling my family the reasons why, would be an awesome witness to my faith. What I really want to know is whether staying at the hotel is my only option.

This is a ton to deal with all at one time. Just one of these scenarios is tough enough, but now I have two situations to deal with, and I’m fairly certain it would burn bridges with the family if I confront them. Please pray that I will have the courage to handle this the way God wants me to.

You might try the Ask an Apologist section but here is my response.

I do not believe you are sinning by staying with either one of them. They are your family, your parents, and you can’t force them to act.

Would it be a great witness to stay in a hotel to show you disagree, but we aren’t living in the best economy right?

Joe
