CBS is dropping "Swingtown." Taking action works!!

For all the parents who participated in calling, writing, and emailing the advertisers of this vulgar show … and for those of you who said it “wouldn’t work,” this just in:

September 4, 2008

**CBS takes financial hit before dropping ‘Swingtown’
**

Dear Mary,
The CBS network finally heard you loud and clear after losing millions of dollars in the Swingtown money pit.

As a result of your dedicated efforts in convincing every major advertiser to pull their commercial ads from Swingtown, CBS has decided to pull the plug and give up.

Swingtown was another brash attempt by CBS to push the envelope on network television. The weekly dose of group se*, casual drug use and teacher-student intimate relationships took its toll as ratings plummeted and advertisers put it on their “do not buy” list.

I firmly believe had you not taken time to get involved, this program would continue to air. Thanks to you, CBS has lost this fight and is giving up. The final episode will air this Friday night.

It was absolutely filthy. The one and only time I happened to flip to that channel while it was on, they were showing a threesome. :eek:

Unreal. 😦 It reminds me of Abercrombie & Fitch…that thread I started, that talked about their ‘decor.’:eek: Sexualized pics everywhere…and they claim their general shopping audience is 18 to 22 yr old men? Huh? My dd is 12, and we were browsing in there before school started…:mad:

They have been closing stores left and right–sure, some of it is the downward economy, and their clothes are expensive…BUT…I think these types of sexual tactics are just not working. Backfiring actually. And remember…companies, tv shows, spend tons of dough-ray-me on advertising…so if the show or store or whatever tanks…then, they really can’t recover that money.

The Holy Spirit is at work!!👍
 
I never saw the show, but it seemed like all hype and smut for ratings. I can understand volence and sexual content when the story calls for it(for example the battle scene in Saving Private Ryan or the bedroom scene in Romeo and Juliet), but this seemed like pure trash with no redeeming value.

My mom remembers the nuns at her school being all freaked out about that scene (the Zefferelli version, 1968 or so) and she said she was sitting there going, “Duh. They’re married!”

The thing I found so wierd about Swingtown was the profile I saw in the New York Times of the show before it came out. The guy who wrote it was basing it on his own parents’ experiences of 1970s suburban swinging. I remember thinking, “Why would you tell your child about that?!”
 
Uh, before we bask in the glow of a successful campaign, let’s give our fellow man credit.

The show was disgusting. Do you really think that people at the ad agencies and the advertisers had to be told that? It’s the kind of show that dies a death of it’s own.

While I agree that these advertisers were pretty quick to jump on the bandwagon, I do think a lot of companies are entirely out of touch. I never would have thought McDonald’s – a “family” organization whose primary market was children until just recently – would fall head-over-heels in love with the GLBT agenda … and I was wrong. Apparently we gave them too much credit. 😦 So a little down-to-earth reminder never works.
 
Hello, I joined this forum because of this thread. Which I found while searching for info on “Swingtown” I am a 46yr old Christian Mother of 3 wonderful Christian children. I am Lutheran and have a strong love and faith in God.

That being said…I have NEVER heard such hypocrites any where. I believe in freedom of speech and our right to exercise those rights. But for another group of “Christians” to self proclaim what is appropriate for ME or MY family to watch is as good as sitting in judgment. This is what the Pharisees did in Jesus’ time. Proclaiming to know what was best for the people. Shame, Shame on you.

I happen to have liked the show. I thought it was entertaining and the characters complex. Their lives unfolding before us, showing us a period when America was growing and changing. You don’t know what path these people would have ended up on! I was a kid in the 1970’s…but I remember them. Womens’ rights, race equality, the burning of the bra…Because of the 70’s movements my Mother was able to finally earn a decent wage AND be respected in the work place.

Like it or not the 70’s WAS a time of drugs, sex…for that matter so were the 1800’s…and for this purpose, the Bible is full of many things we don’t talk about in great detail with our children. Like how Noah lay drunk and naked in his tent and cursed his son’s for walking in on him…Or of men who LUSTED for another woman and had her husband killed so he could have her…

“Swingtown” may not have been to your liking, but to think you had something to do with it being canceled is a great “Power” rush for you it seems. Make no mistake if this show was indeed canceled it is not because of a “Movement” by you or any other "Christian Group’. In fact if your movement were as big as you think, it would have probably KEPT it on the air with all the controversy. The only reason it would be canceled would be because of “MONEY”. If you had as much “Power” as you think you do then I am quite sure that many shows would be canceled. Like “Desperate Housewives”, “Grey’s Anatomy”,“Sex and the City”…the list could go on. If you truly want to affect change in TV programming then it starts with what YOU choose to watch and purchase…

Like abortion the only way it will truly end is not with making it illegal, but with the education of our children and our community. And I have found that when we as Christians go on the attack, we are easily dismissed as fanatics. It is when we are clear and speak letting the Holy Spirit lead us that people listen. Like your arguments here, you are speaking from YOUR emotions. It is when we are still and quite that the Holy Spirit can work and gives us the words that change lives. That make a difference. Never forget we are ALL sinners, saved by GRACE. Jesus paid the price. NOT you. Nothing you can ever do can earn your salvation. You are no better than me, or anyone else who choose to watch and enjoy a TV show like “Swingtown”

When YOU choose to impose upon me or anyone else YOUR opinions as THE right way, or pass judgment on me You become easily dismissed as a “Holier than thou” type who has forgotten the Cross. “First see to get the board out of your eye, before you try to get the splinter from your brothers.”

Television is not the demise of our morals, people were saying that when Elvis had his 1st TV apperance…the demise in my opinion is that people have left God out of things. Including Christians who want to go around telling others what THEY think Gods says is best for them. All I can say is that, “God is God all by himself” and he doesn’t need anyone else acting like they KNOW what he would want for anyone else. Worry about you. Pray for others, but don’t forget to pray for your own sins. And if television is not airing shows you want to watch…well get rid of you television and cable, and get out and volunteer in your church and community. Make yourself useful to God. And when you speak a criticism be sure that you know, that you know, that you know, it is coming from God and his Holy word. And not your prideful mouth!

Yikes “mom2girls”, you must have really enjoyed that sinful show. Do you really believe that Christ would have sat down and watched “Swingtown” knowing what the show involved. I highly doubt he would approve of it. Doesn’t mean it is ok to watch just because it happened in the past. Also, not sure what the whole “power” thing is. You must be bitter about something.

Hmm, Mom2Girls… I don’t really know what to say. Except I’m praying for you to find the understanding of why as a Christian you should be completely morally opposed to that show. 🤷

I don’t understand how one can be a Christian of any sorts and believe that sort of storyline belongs on television. Isn’t the entire idea of being a Christian that we are to do what CHRIST would do. I can’t imagine Christ sitting on his Lazy Boy, eating popcorn, and drinking a beer watching Swingtown…maybe that’s just me.

That said. Nathan and I caught the first few minutes of the first episode by chance when it came out, and we were disgusted. That type of show should not be on basic cable. If they insist on airing such smut it should be on HBO or Showtime.

We only have basic cable, and I am appalled at the shows that come on those channels: Swingtown, Gossip Girl, 90210, Desperate Housewives, Lipstick Jungle…it is sad that nowadays selling a woman’s sexuality seems to get good ratings.
