Who do we thank for developing such a reference? Thank YOU for finding it.

I “found” it by developing it. I’m a programmer by trade. I used the web site of Fr. Felix Just, S.J., to produce the information the tool provides.

It would be interesting to note what isn’t read ever. Do you think there is a listing somewhere of this?

Since I now know the individual verses of Scripture used, I could produce the inverse list which you ask for: verses of Scripture NOT heard in the Mass.

I’ve just added the Lessons, Epistles, and Gospel readings from the 1962 missal (as reported at Fr. Just’s web site). He doesn’t include the Gradual and Alleluia/Tract, nor the propers for votive Masses, etc. But it’s a start.

Now you can see, for example, that only in the Extraordinary Form do we hear those urgent words of St. Paul in 1 Cor 11:27-29 about being careful not to receive Holy Communion unworthily. In the Ordinary Form, we hear parts of 1 Cor 11:17-34, but not verses 27-29.

It’s not quite what you asked for, but here is a summary page of what percentage actually gets read from each book. I sometimes hear the claim that the entire bible is read, but that is not so. (EDIT - I say that last sentence to explain in part why I find the summary page helpful/interesting.)

I guess I’m going to spend some time on Obadiah, Judith, and 1 Chronicles…just because these are so-o-o rejected. There must be
something in there that needs to be seen.

Okay, where would a reverse resource be valuable? Why would some person need to use this? Is it worth your time?
I found out what I needed to know just by deduction. My 1 Samuel chaps 5 and 6 did not come up with a reading date, so therefore, by reasoning, the lectionary doesn’t schedule it.

Okay, went to the new site, plugged in 1 Corinthians 11:17-34, and came up with the listing. The entries that have " (1962) "
does that mean that these are pre-Vatican II? And therefore, this is called Extraordinary? And thus…everything pre-Vatican is Extraordinary? I guess that I do not understand the difference between Extra and just plain ordinary.

The entries that have [1962] in them are from the Roman Missal of 1962, the missal used for the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. This missal was used before and during Vatican II.

“Extraordinary” in this context simply means “outside of the ordinary”.

The Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite is that form which was developed after Vatican II, first promulgated by Pope Paul VI in 1969, and then edited by Pope John Paul II a couple of times, and most recently by Pope Benedict XVI last year (when he ordered the addition of three new texts for the dismissal at the end of Mass).

Your post made me want to grin and say that what must be missing is the head of Holofernes, but I checked japhy’s site, and a portion of those verses is included, but seemingly only in a responsorial psalm, and not one of the three readings, and not the verses where she does the deed.

Well, the psalm response leaves off the part about “your blow at the head of the chief of our enemies.”

That other web page with the percentages must only be talking about 1st, 2nd, and Gospel verses scheduled. Japhy was being very thorough…good thing.
