Was asked to teach our 3 grade CCD Class, first of all I Love being involved in my church. I have never taught a class before, but they are very encouraging and think I am doing a great job so far. I love my two girls they are at that age where they are sponges. I would like to set up my class enjoyable, does anyone have any ideas that would be helpful.

I am responsible for the teaching and learning of two young ladies and i take this very serious.

Thank you for all your ideas and help.

Have a blessed day!!!

First, I want to thank you for your volunteering your time to teach CCD! My wife and I taught 5th Grade which was a very rewarding experience. Most did not have smart phones at this age, which made teaching a breeze. Then we taught 7th Grade and it was a challenge. 3rd Grad is a great age. We saved the “fun” stuff for last. If the kids got through the curriculum, then they knew that we had something fun after.

I designed a couple Game Show. You are free to download the first one here: “Catholic Game Show slides (Eucharist edition).” The others, I did in DVD format. One time our Fifth Graders challenged the Sixth Graders and we called it, “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader” (after the show that was popular on TV at the time : )

Board Games are fun! If you get “Codenames” or “Codenames Pictures” and swap out the cards with the " Catholic Words Memory Match Vol 1 or Catholic Words Memory Match Vol 2.

Hope this helps : )

Those are some great ideas. Thank you! I am truly enjoying it. I feel like i am getting a refresher as well. Which I appreciate very much. I am looking forward to leaving a lasting impression on these young ladies. Looking forward to next year already. We are having fun, I hope. Now if we can get more students in the class that would be great.

Again, thank you for your time and assistance. Have a blessed day! 🙂

Just stumbled across this, (I have not been on the forum in some time)
I have been teaching 6/7th graders for 7 years, and have found some things, (this may be a bit old for your kids but here goes)
  • Hangman is always popular- I use this to help the kids prepare for an end of year assessment.
This is usually inline with what I am teaching-from saint to transubstantiation, from martyr to trinitarian, and so on
  • End of season , I put some time into a ccd jeopardy game which I have on my laptop but can be done with cards. All the topics and questions are in support of whats taught,
  • great videos like busted halo
    for communion
    for confirmation
    etc
We also use a VIsions pamphlet supplied by our office of education which has crosswords and puzzles.

I try to make sure everything I show or games we play are in line with the message and church teaching and also relevant for the audience

A couple of other things, when cell phones do come along, you will need to place a box in the back and round them up.
Also, I have found that christian meditation for 6/7th graders for a few minutes (which I was against as I thought that would not work for the kids) was very popular and the kids really enjoyed doing nothing for 5 minutes which is rarity for them

Hope this was useful and blessings for what you are doing.
