Hello,

I had a CCD student ask me something along the lines of where did Jesus go after the Resurrection. I said I thought He went up to God the Father.

I’ve been thinking about this, I know Jesus took the righteous souls from Sheol into Heaven. But did He do this with His resurrected body? So Jesus went up to Heaven and then came back down for 40 days? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks and God Bless

🙂

After he died, Jesus went to “the place of departed spirits” to claim the righteous dead. He had not yet risen again, so he did this in his spirit. We don’t know how this was accomplished - there is no reason to think that he accompanied them to heaven (and no reason to think otherwise). I’ve always though he did it like a Star Trek transporter - they just appeared in heaven, without undertaking any sort of journey.

Having accomplished that, his spirit was reunited with his body and glorified. This was the Resurrection. He stayed on earth for 40 days, teaching the Apostles in all things (unfortunately, they wrote almost nothing down about it).

Afterward, he ascended to heaven.

Don’t forget the persecutions. Perhaps much was written down that has been lost to us. 😦

I mean, in the apostle’s creed, it said “he is decended to hell, on the third day he rose again from the dead” I think it literally meant he was decended to hell.
